Subject:Noobishness: Original Compositions

Greetings to all! I received ACID a few days ago and am just starting to feel comfortable with some of the program basics. I own a Yamaha keyboard with MIDI interfacing capability, and my system specs are below. Here's my noobism. I am excited about ACID's loop-mixing capabilities. However, I am interested in writing new pieces of music and creating loops from scratch. I'm hoping to work with electronic/industrial music; examples of something I might like to do would be to create a custom drum loop 'a la Nine inch Nails or a custom electronic-sound/guitar riff 'a la Fatboy Slim. How might I do this? Thanks for your patience! System Specs: Dell Inspiron XPS Generation 1 Laptop 1024 MB Ram ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 w/ 128mb DVD/CD+RW 3.4 GHZ Pentium 4 HT 55 GB HD, 7200 RPM |

Hello horastes, Which version of ACID? You can certainly create your own compositions provided you have the right tools. You can either record using soft synths (via MIDI) or plain old digital audio. (You could, of course, also do both.) The latter usually requires a little more involvement depending on the situation. For example, I record my own guitar riffs, so I have my guitar effects processor connected to my computer's audio interface. Since it's digital audio, arrangement is not as forgiving as MIDI is. What you do with the audio is purely up to you once you get it recorded. There are many creative "tricks" you can pull off in ACID itself, like erasing the contents of an event every other 16th note. If you want to make loops out of recorded material, the easiest way to do it is to solo a track (or tracks), set the Loop Region over the area of content you want to create a new loop out of, then use Ctrl+M with the "render loop region only" option enabled. What this will do is automatically ACIDize the rendered sample with key and tempo info of the project. (If you want to create percussion loops that have no definite pitch, make sure you set the project's key to "none" before rendering.)
