They are just pointers to the original. You can apply mediaFX to the pointers seperately from the originals.

To clarify, everything in the media pool is a pointer. Don't think of them as being the original media files. They aren't. That's why you can delete them and also why, if you copy them to a new project, you don't end up with new copies of the media files.
