OK, I'm running SF 8. When I record Line in from my stereo - perfect. However - when I change the recording setting on the Recording Control dialog box from Line in to What U Hear and attempt to record from the sound card output straight into SF... it adds a delay effect to the incoming audio. If I cancel out of the recording dialog - sound returns to its normal state.

Can anyone help with this?

Thank you.

1) What you experience is called "latency." Set your recording input to your source and never use "What You Hear." Latency is not the only reason to do this...

2) Consider an alternative to using a Sound Blaster for recording. There are several alternatives from Echo, M-Audio, Tascam, and others. Do a search for "sound card" or "audio interface" on these forums for LOTS of discussion.

1. I don't know what you mean by
<< set your recording input to your source and never use "What You Hear." >>

because - as far as I know - "What You Hear" is the only option you can select if you want to record a streaming file in Windows Media Player or RealPlayer... (or the sound of a video game etc)

So would you please explain what this means?

2. There was a time when I recorded RealAudio streams etc. this way all the time. It is only relatively recently that I have encountered this delay effect when recording the output of the sound card. So shouldn't I be able to record using Sound Blaster? What I mean is - obviously SOMETHING changed - because I used to be able to do it successfully. So there has to be a way to get rid of this accursed delay... right????

Thank you very much for your response. I look forward to hearing from you again.

I will guess that you have "Enable audio input monitoring" checked in the Record dialog and in this mode, the sound card is mixing it's output with the somewhat delayed "What U Hear" audio that Sound Forge is passing back to it.

If that is the case, the recorded audio should still be fine and you can get rid of the delay by either unchecking that checkbox (meters will be a little behind what you are hearing), or by seeing if there is a way to mute the original output in the sound card's control panel.

Damn! Nice!

Once I dechecked "Enable audio input monitoring"... problem solved.

Thanks very much!

Thanks to ForumAdmin for clarifying the monitoring settings in Sound Forge.

You should be able to record from Media Player, Real Players, or video games, etc. by selecting "Wave/MP3" as the Record Input Source. That is how these sounds are produced and I don't know why it wouldn't work unless that source is muted or its Recording volume is turned down.

The reasons "What U Hear" is not preferable are:
1) Added latency, as you've already discovered
2) The signal goes through a whole additional mixer, volume pad and amp, adding more noise and distortion
3) "What U Hear" mixes the audio from ALL open inputs, like Aux, Mic, and CD Analog, which will add a whole lot of unwanted noise. Even if you specifically mute all of the inputs except "Wave/MP3" and record from "What U Hear," there will still be more noise, distortion, and latency than if you select "Wave/MP3" as the Recording Source, which is the preferred method..

Again, you may want to look into an audio solution other than the SoundBlaster. There are interfaces in a modest price range that are far superior for listening and recording. Hope this helps, and Happy Holidays!

Thank you very much for this explanation. It is quite helpful. Now I know 1. THAT I should be using the Wave/MP3 setting
and 2. WHY I should be using it.

Very much appreciated.
