Subject:GFX Card/Tweaking - Clicks/Noizes

maybe others have similar troubles in acid. whenever a project has few tracks and i move the scrollbars or resize the view of the arrangement, there are a lot of clicks and it seems its caused by the gfx card or whatever.
i have a 256mb radeon card in my music pc and now im wondering how i can rid of that clicks and noizes. is there any way to tweak that up? i have 1GM ram and a 3.2 Mhz CPU - i guess this should be enough and im not in lack of resources. i have a hammerfall rme soundcard and so i doubt its caused because of that. imo it must be a graphical thing because is only happening when the view changes and the project is playing.

any advice? or any recommendations for a better gfx card maybe?

Have you tried reducing or turning off video acceleration to see if the problem goes away? You certainly have enough horsepower to run ACID, so there's no trouble there.

(Have you also tried updating the video drivers for the Radeon? Version 5.3 was released the other day.)

i tried both.. no luck. somehow i just feel its a performance issue. when i have an arragement with about 5 tracks and lets say 2 vsti's it begins to crackle when i move events or resize the view.

watching taskmanager tells me that cpu resources are on about 50% and ram is not even the half of what i have got. so.. whats the problem? is radeon a bad gfx card? actually im not a fan of ati and i will change it if somebody can tell me another card is better ;-)

Did you try and check Options > Preferences > Use slower updates to prevent playback clicks during editing? I’m not sure if it will help but its worth a try.

tried that.. still clicks and stuff. i even disabled drawing of elements but it still does happen. its ok in an almost empty project.. but it starts pretty soon to click when i add some tracks in it ;-/ to play i have to resize the arrangement to full screen.. else it does click/crackle when the play cursor goes over the screen border.

Chris,

Could you fill out your system specs in your user profile?

Thanks
Peter

it seems that updating the RME driver helped a little. its almost gone on a project where i dont use a vsti. as soon i use a vsti or more it begins to crackle. same for phat plugins like waves compressors or t-racks.

when i watch the cpu in taskmanager i can see that it goes to 100% as soon i move the scrollbar in acid.. a running project is maybe around 40% of cpu and that is ok, during normal playback i dont get any clicks.

any advices maybe?? its a radeon 9600 with newest driver.

I know Waves plug-ins are infamous for their resource hogging, but that doesn't explain one single VSTi causing the problem also.

I have a Radeon 9200 with the latest drivers and can't seem to get CPU usage past about 30% during a somewhat busy project while using the scrollbar. (See my profile the rest of my specs.)

I wonder if there's something up with the RME driver?

Sounds similar to the problems I and others are having. There is some inherent tick in Acid that doesn't deal well with scrolling or moving/ resizing events. I usually get crashes, but I also do get clicks and crackles (preferrable to crashes but still pretty ugly sounding) sometimes while I'm trying to move or edit an event while playing. I've tried all the tweaks suggested above, and it doesn't matter. I use an Echo Mia MIDI card (& I've tried all sorts of different buffer settings), so it's not specific to your soundcard.

illogical.. .you seem anyways to have similar problems related to crashing and bugsy like me. can you please tell your full system specs? i wonder if that is hardware related or some windows issue maybe.

im using:
WinXP SP1, Radeon 9600, Hammerfall HDSP 9652, P4 3.2, 1GB Ram, S-ATA Disk RAID - i think that is all that matters...

Hi Klirrfaktor,
My specs are similar, but I'm not sure about makes/models of motherboard (I assume that's what Hammerfall is). I've got a Gateway with XP Home SP2, 200 GB HD 7200RPM (not sure the make here either), 512k RAM, p4 3.2 w/HT, Echo Mia Midi. I just saw the post from Sony saying that your error reports helped them find the bug...thanks a bunch for that, hopefully the new patch will put our troubles to rest.

hammerfall is a soundcard.. you should know this one :-p www.rme-audio.de

my mainboard is Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

i wonder if the bug sony discovered also addresses this crackle stuff when moving events or resize the window thing. would be awesome if so.. ;-)

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

i cannot believe that this all was caused by the hyper threading feature of my cpu!!! i disabled it in bios and now the clicks are gone!!!
