I am curious what you all use to record external sources to ACID.
I am looking for something that will take either 1/4" and/or RCA inputs and USB 2 outs.

You do not want to use USB out unless you are only going to record one track at a time. USB relies heavily on your CPU for data transfer. So don’t be fooled by USB 2.0 bandwidth claims; if your processor can’t keep up it doesn’t matter what the bandwidth of USB 2 is. No one is getting the throughput that USB 2 claims.

If you are looking for an external device I would recommend firewire (IEEE 1394) instead. Firewire has NO CPU overhead and so bandwidth across the firewire devices doesn’t affect your processor at all.

To answer your original question, I use an M-Audio Firewire 410. It’s 2-in/8-out. I’m planning to get either an Echo Layla 3G because I need 8-in/-8out for an upcoming project, or the new M-Audio ProjectMix I/O which is not only 8x8 but also is a HUI controller with automated faders.

Use an Echo MiaMIDI here, specifically its S/PDIF input (from a DigiTech GNX2 guitar effects processor). I have the option of recording 1/4" too, but the S/PDIF provides more neatness in terms of clutter. :)
