Subject:SF Audio Studio 8 lost audio output

I purchased, installed and registered the software from on Monday (6th Nov) and after opening SFA8 about 3 times I have now lost the option for Audio outputs? It was working fine originally but I was auditioning .wavs from a dvd and opened one .wav. It said that there was a problem with the file although it still opened it? (may just be coincidence?). The software did not crash/freeze or shutdown and the sample still played.

About 5 minutes later after switching back from another audio programme I found that there was no audio output. I am running Norton Goback 4 and restored my computer back to 3 hours previous (system restore point). The sound output option is still greyed out (unavailable). I Then uninstalled SFA8, reinstalled, updated with latest build (63) and still there is no option for audio out (greyed out).

I am also running registered versions of Reason 2.5 and Recycle 2.0 which still recognise the standard soundcard without any problems.

I have also experienced this with SoundForge 8 on a completely different laptop although I sold it at a loss without registering because of this same reason. The other laptop wasnt running goback 4 and was also running Reason and Recycle (both now moved over to new laptop)

I was hoping that a more basic version of the software wouldnt have these gripes but it appears it does.

Can anyone shed any light on this or knows about any issues when using a std sound card. As you can understand, a wave editor with no sound output is pretty useless.

Hope you can help me on this as its put me off purchasing Acid Studio due to it possibly having the same problems?

Info on Laptop. Pentium M (centrino) 1.7ghz, 512mb, 60gb hd. No audio cards/devices apart from standard ac97 compatible.

Thanks
Stuart

In Options->Preferences->Audio, select something other than Microsoft Sound Mapper in the "Audio device type" combo.

If you are using an ASIO driver, make sure your other audio applications are set up to release the driver when they lose focus.

If the ASIO driver you previously selected in Sound Forge is unavailable when it is launched, it will revert to the Microsoft Sound Mapper, which uses whatever device you've selected in the Windows Sounds and Audio Devices Control Panel.

Thanks for the reply.

I found the problem after a lot of searching yesterday. It appears that the GM wavetable synth had grabed the output, something to do with the Asio4All driver (I am guessing that this is something to do with the Asio driver not being released as you mentioned above?). Disabling the wavetable synth allowed Soundforge to output audio again.

The only downside is that the audio output box is still greyed out? The device box above this is available though and also the audio input box is still ok?

While this doesnt cause a problem at the moment, I am not sure whether this will cause a problem with an echo indigo with virtual outputs (unsure whether they could be selected?)

I will have a look at your suggestion above incase that is causing the greyed out box, but just glad to have the outputs back :-)
