OT: Software for printing onto DVD disc

JackW wrote on 10/7/2005, 11:35 AM
The software that comes with the Epson 200 printer is pretty primative and, most significantly, won't accept any file format other than .jpg

I'm looking for software that will support an alpha channel -- .png or .gif files -- which will allow for making portions of backgrounds transparant for better composition on the disc surface.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You can use any software that supports your requirements, such as Photoshop, Corel PhotoPaint, and many others, and export the final as jpg for use with the Epson software. I do it all the time.

I have version 1.30A of the Epson Print CD software that came with my R320 printer. I have been using both jpg and bmps in the past, and I just tested png successfully. GIF was a no-go, though.

You might check their support site for an updated version of the software. At least you would be able to use png.

I think it is best, though, to use a Photoshop type program to really do all of the work.

I have a 200 too. You can use any paint program such as
Jasc PSP.

When setting up printer use paper type CD/DVD and
source MANUAL instead of SHEET.
I will try to find my template I used as a layer and post a link to it.

EDIT:
move the white mask layer so it is on top to prevent ink on the clear plastic
parts.

I've looked all over for an update of this software as I'm still using v1.20A. I don't suppose anyone has found a place to update this?

I have a bravo II by primera and I upgraded to Surething pro and it still didn't have the results I wanted, but you can export a background out of it in a cd shape, open it in any editor (I use Macromedia Fireworks MX2004) and import it back into Surething and it works like a charm and looks exactly how I want it. I also have a r320m by Epson, but don't ever use the print to disc feature as the Bravo II is more efficient and I can save the files in something other than the epson format, which is real helpful for future use of the files.

Oh, you still can't use gif even with the update as epson would have to pay royalties; surething doesn't support exporting to gif either, but Micrografx Picture Publisher 8, 10 does as well as fireworks, Adobe photoshop, Corel, Jasc, etc. Pick up an older version of any picture editor and use that or try GIMP, which is a free open source editor. Try www.softpedia.com and search for gimp

Does surething pro remember printer settings across prints/invocations? My biggest issue with the bravo is when I use printable to the hub media (which is pretty much all the time lately), I can't burn and print at the same time, since surething doesn't save my changes to the inside diameter with the picture being printed - nor does it remember settings across invocations of surething.

There's a great program called Draw Plus 7 - a vector graphics program - that I used to print to the Epson R200. It's made by a companyt called SERIF in England. There's even a free version 5.0 available for download. I used to export as a PNG with transparency from this program then import into the Epson software, but then I created a template and print directly from the program. Makes for beautiful CD/DVD's.

Scott, I can print and burn at the same time (I have a bravo II) and the Primo DVD 2.1 software brings the print file from Surething Deluxe edition 4 (Sorry, when I said pro, I meant this one) software. It does remember my hub settings as all I print is hub printable media. I know that I changed a setting, but I don't know if that was under printer options for hub printable and then made that default or if I did it straight from the Surething program. But I did change it and it stuck.
