Subject:Standalone Sequencer To Rewire To Acid?

Has anyone come across a standalone midi sequencer that can be rewired to Acid? I know that many full programs (sonar, reason, etc.) can be rewired to Acid, but I'm inquiring about an app that is just for sequencing and is rewire slave capable. Does one exist that anyone knows of?

Mackie Tracktion 2. Simple to use, provides a ReWire host for ACID, supports VST instruments with MIDI automation envelopes. The perfect companion for ACID users who need more MIDI control. You might even find some used copies of Tracktion 1 cheap (Mackie was giving it away just before the new version came out).

Thanks guys. I'll check these two out. I played with Cakewalk's Music Creator 2 yesterday. Wasn't what I as looking for. I'll try the N-track and Traktion.

Tried both N-Track and Tracktion, but hated the workflow on both of them. I'm going to try and get a feel for Tracktion a bit more, but I didn't have a positive initial impression. Acid's workflow really hooks you and makes anything else that you go to look like a giant mess! In addtion, neither can wok as a rewire slave. What is it that's keeping someone (maybe a plugin company) from making a standalone sequencer that can act as a rewire slave? I'm surprised that I can find one. Sony could probably make a killing with an app like.

I have to agree with you there. So... What is missing from ACID’s MIDI implementation that would make you not need another sequencer if implemented? (Remember, there is always ACID 6 to wish for) ;-)

If Acid handled Midi in a more "traditional" way, I'd be happier than a pig in mud!! My main beef is intricate control changes. Yes, you can do them in Acid, but not without a bunch of work. For example, the paintbrush tool is cool, but wouldn't a line tool for more exact changes make sense. Also, you can't copy and paste control change information. In addition, the abilty to step edit graphically on the grid would be a HUGE plus so you could "see" what you're doing. Quantize on the fly would be a blessing too. You know...."traditional" midi stuff. Nothing too extravagant.

Have you tried the GenieSys plugin OPT MIDI Editor?

This was once a commercial product that used the OPT (Open Plugin Technology developed by Yamaha) standard that Acid uses for its MIDI editing facilities to add editing features more like a traditional MIDI editor would have. When GenieSys ceased trading the programmer (Anton???) took the unusual but very welcome step of making the plugins he had developed for GenieSys available for free - what a splendid fellow.

You can find the MIDI Editor (along with some other useful plugins - StolenTrack might also interest you) at http://www.silksound.com/geniesys/
I think you will find that it adds some of the features you are missing in the built-in Acid MIDI editor.

My 2 cents: Not being able to edit MIDI in the grid is the most painful part of Acid MIDI.

Thanks for the link to the GenieSoft plugins. They are really useful in ACID 5. I like their midi editor/piano roll more than the ACID one.

Are there anymore OPT plugins available? I think MusicLab and Ntonyx plugins are OPT capable. Do Yamaha do any? Not sure if others are available.

I forgot about those. I spent the day checking them and they definately do make midi in Acid better (especially the control changes). Still hope Sony steps up Acid's midi game next round.

Have you checked energyXT? It has standalone, Vsti and effects. Superb for midi and audio routing.

After Using ACID exclusively for about 3 years, I finally got fed up with its limitations. I was spending hours messing about with "played" MIDI parts and trying to comp vocals

I trialled a few sequencers and Tracktion 2 was the eventual winner. I have spent quite a bit if time getting into it. It has a few quirks but once you get the hang of it, its really straightforward and very stable.

I now use FL Studio to create loops, and then ACID to sequence then via rewire into my main host Tracktion where I do all my singing, Piano and any other "played" parts. Its a great combination and can really recommend it.
