Last week, I had my hard drive crash. I bought a new hard drive (larger, but currently with a 137 GB partition) and reinstalled everything - WinXP (Home) and Acid 5 Pro, and SB Audigy drivers, etc. Before the crash, I had everything set up fine and I could record/playback without any stuttering, freezing or glitching - everything was PERFECT. NOW, however, the latency on my SPDIF inputs has changed (but I fixed that), and it's a dice toss when I'm trying to record whether I get a pause (which ruins the track for the most part). I did NOT update Windows to SP2, nor have I installed any further Acid updates (didn't know about them until just now). I'm in the process of making sure I have the latest drivers for my Audigy card - But my frustration level is maxed out. I have to get this CD finished and to the replicators in less than 2 weeks! HELP! |

What are the specs on the new hard drive? A 7200 RPM model (either EIDE or SATA) is best. You can get away with a 5400 model unless there's a lot of activity going on (like multiple tracks streaming from the hard disk). Your best bet is to use two hard drives; one for your system, and one for your media. In an EIDE setup, you want the system drive as primary master while keeping the media drive as a secondary master. I think I've got enough onboard RAM to hold all the tracks in memory (I've got 512 MB of DRAM on the motherboard). Maybe that's my problem? The tracks aren't getting put in RAM? I've got a Maxtor 6L250R0, 7200RPM SATA/ultra ATA drive Message last edited on9/7/2005 1:40:25 PM byvoxwoman. |

Beatmapped and One-shot track types always stream from your hard drive; only Loop track types load into RAM. Still, with that hard drive, you should be able to get away with a few tracks streaming from your hard drive. You mentioned you didn't have any problems before your new hard drive. Was the old hard drive partitioned? I've heard partitioning could cause problems in a situation like this. all hard drives have a partition, but both drives only had/have one partition. I kinda figured that's what was going on when it was only taking up 15 Meg of RAM for a song that had 12 tracks and was 5 minutes in length :) I bit the bullet and made submixes to use for a recording bed for new tracks. I also installed SP2 and all updates for Windows and sacrificed a chicken in the backyard. That seemed to help a lot, as all Acid 5c has done to me today is crash twice at completely random times and refuses to record in sync with the rest of the song. But I can work with that. I have to move the tracks into another project for mixing anyway, so they have to be synced up properly by hand as it is. (BTW, the chicken thing is a joke) Message last edited on9/8/2005 10:18:52 PM byvoxwoman. |

Well, I knew the chicken thing was a joke. I think. *shifts eyes left and right* Have you tried completely uninstalling ACID and reinstalling using only the 5.0c update? (It actually acts as the full version provided you have your serial key handy.) Sometimes that clears up things for users. I'll try that *after* I send my album out for mastering - just in case it decides to delete more than just the program. |
