Subject:OT: RealAudio source to wma / wav

Sorry to ask here, but SoundForgers usually know best...
I have several dozen .ram, .ra and .rm (RealAudio) files that need to be converted to something more manageable and editable (such as wav, mp3 or wma) - ultimately for use in Vegas 6b. I've scoured the web for tools to do this but haven't found any. Quite happy to pay for the right tool (that's clean and bug-free).

Any suggestions or pointers most appreciated.

What i've done with good success is to play the file in RealPlayer or RealAlternative, and set Sound Forge to record the sound card's output channel.

Thanks, Chienworks. Yes, I've tried that, but this method takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r since each rm and ra file is about an hour. I could have been clearer - what I'm looking for is a batch or file-by-file recoder/converter.

I believe Media Cleaner may do this trick, but I don't have it here. Take a look at their website and try the demo.

As I understand it, ra and rm are not actually files - they are pointers to a streaming file from a website - so the only way to get the full file is to actually stream it (ie play it) and record the realtime audio.

If you save a ra file, you will see what I mean - they are tiny!

jumbuk: not necessarily. They can be pointers, or they can be the full file. Usually the pointer file has an extension of .ram

.rm is the actual audio file... But one would need a app. to open it since SF cannot. ... But you can "Save as" a Real Audio file.... Go figure.

This is a Real licensing restriction. Sound Forge can render them (and optionally launch the player), but not open them for editing.

Try RA to WAV Recorder available at:
http://www.rawavrecorder.homestead.com/
It has worked for me on the occasions I had to convert some Real files. You do need to have some version of RealPlayer on your machine for it to work.

Best of Luck,

Bob

Thanks, Bob. Seems the only way is to use a real-time tool that in effect records as it plays. I've scoured the web for batch converters but nada.

Once Again:

HAVE YOU TRIED dbPOWERAMP?

It does everything you have asked for and more.
And perfectly. It has been around for some time, is readily available, it's free, and is the recognized "Swiss Army Knife of Audio Converters." It batch converts Real Audio and almost anything else you can throw at it to almost anything else. Just what more did you need?
