Subject:Do you use loops or one shots more.

Sup everyone, i'm new to acid pro 5 and i was wondering if you use more loops or one shots? Also it seems to me that its real hard to make beast using one shots. Any pointers welcomed. Thanks again.

I like to use loops more. If I have to construct a section using one-shots, I will ALWAYS use Ctrl+M to render it to a new track as a loop, then delete the one-shots. This has the added advantage that if I need that loop again, I now have it as one wave file and don’t have to reconstruct it again from one-shots. Some things like cymbal crashes I keep as one-shots but anything complex I render as a loop.

I know Iacobus (mD) likes to use one-shots more so it’s really a matter of workflow. I hate cut-and-paste and would rather just paint loops on my tracks. Just a personal preference for me.

but isn't there a loss of audio quality when you use loops cuz acid has to time-stretch on the fly, even if the tempo of the loop is the same as the tempo of the project?

that's why i use one-shots and nothing but.

It is true that some loops like bass guitar have a low tolerance for stretching, but I have not perceived any degradation in overall sound quality because I use loops. You just have to stick within their tolerances. (BTW, how do you know your one-shots were not stretched in post production to get them all in the same key) ;-)

im using almost only one-shots. they give me a lot more control over the arrangement as loops. i use loops only for percussion stuff like hihats or rythm loops. creating beats with oneshots is just a matter of knowhow... acid is pretty friendly for arranging one-shots - the only thing missing is the feature to drop different samples on one track but you can get around this with merging a few one-shots to one big file.

whether the one-shots were stretched in post production or not, i don't see the point in degrading the sound quality by using them as loops instead of one-shots. ;)

I use almost entirely one shots. Only time I use loops is for an underlaying backbeat or a percussion loop. Acid's grid is ideal for programming one shot beats. As a matter of fact, it's one of the only things that keeps me around because once you get used to Acid's grid, it's downright painful to try to switch to another program. It's like a weird form of software crack! Now if they can only make the midi implementation as easy......

Believe it or not, I use both One-shots and Loops equally. I use One-shots for my percussive tracks and Loops for other material (like my own recorded guitar tracks I've bounced down).

I rarely build beats from one-shots. For my styles of music (mainly ethnic ambient) recorded loops are more realistic. I do use one-shots for vocals, FX etc.

I don't think Acid is ideal for making beats because you end up with separate tracks for every one-shot - gets unwieldy.

I'd like to see Acid add a version of the MIDI loop editor, where you could load a set of one-shots (a "drumkit") in place of the MIDI keyboard. This would be a bit like the Cubase drum editor, and would make it very easy to build your own loops.

"the only thing missing is the feature to drop different samples on one track but you can get around this with merging a few one-shots to one big file."

Yet another good reason to add a Vegas-like track type to Acid allowing multiple clips per track.
