rendering without .sfl files please

Jey wrote on 5/13/2005, 1:48 AM
Hi all,
I'd like to render out some projects to AVI. No big deal. But I render these files to a so calles 'Watch Folder'. This is just some sort of batch processing folder for Cleaner XL, which I use to create MPEG2. I've been doing this for a long time now, and are very happy with this workflow.
Until some time ago. When rendering files from Vegas I also get an .SFL file. I don't need these, nor did I asked for them. The problem is that Cleaner doesn't process my Avi's enymore since SFL files are being saved together with the AVI. How can I turn off the creation of SFL files? I've already deselected the 'save markers' checkbox...
Somebody???

Thanks

I'm getting these .sfl files as well, since upgrading to Vegas 6, despite unchecking the "project markers" box. V3, 4, and 5 only created these for me when I asked it to. Is anybody else getting these regardless of the checkbox?

I have exactly the same problem as Jey. Is there anyone (at Sony) or otherwise that can help????

Thanks,

Turn off "create audio proxy files" in Vegas' internal prefs.

Internal prefs (beware, don't mess around in here unless you know what you're doing) is shown by holding down ctrl+shift, then selecting Ops/Prefs.

You need to flip the bit to FALSE instead of its default TRUE.

That should negate the creation of .sfl files, which are audio proxy files. Note that this will increase the time needed to open audio files and projects that contain waveform information.

Um, aren't .sfk files "audio proxies," and .sfl are the project marker files?

Anybody know how we can avoid the .sfl files if we've already unchecked that option?

Thanks,

Greg

These are annoying me too. Didn't used to get them.

actually to clarify, these sfl files arent actual "proxy" files....

theyre sonic foundry image files for audio waveforms and allow u to zoom right down to the bit level... these files have been a part of Vegas and Soundforge for as far as i can remember, however only recently have they been affiliated with video renders from Vegas (since version 6 from memory)
Now if u want to delete an avi or mpg which was done in vegas, u wont be able to delete it unless u also delete the corresponding sfl... but u can delete the sfl before the avi...

These files do no harm, and in fact allow the speed up of inportation of audio to your project..

If u rip a cd, or import mp3s into your project, go to the directory which the files lives in and u will see an sfl file created in th same directory where the file lives.. as Vegas or Forge, or Acid open it... if u delete this file, the audio file will need to "rebuild peaks" or graphically redraw the audio for you everytime u open ur project... however if u keep these files with ur audio, ull have a preexisting database of preconformed audio files.

Theyve ALWAYS been there, but now its a lil more prominant.. i guess its due to media manager implementation

Padre, i think you're referring to .sfk files, which indeed have always been there. We're talking about .sfl files which appear to contain markers and metadata. These used to be created when asked for, but now seem to be created all the time whether requested or not.

A new feature added in V6 is Save Path to source with media, deleting the sfk files stops this from working, the sfk files are only created when this option is checked during the render.
The sfl files contain the audio waveforms and have indeed also been added in V6 to speedup loading avis etc onto the T/L.

Anyway it's a pretty trivial task to delete them from a directory, just sort by extension, select them and delete. Still I agree it's be nice to have th option NOT to create them in the first place.

OK, i'm suffering from an extreme head cold and sinus & ear infection right now, so my brain may not be functioning quite up to spec, but ... if i'm reading this discusssion right ... did SONY switch .sfk and .sfl? It always used to be that .sfk was the audio waveform display and .sfl was metadata & markers. At least, that's what my currently addled brain remembers. I never saw .sfl files unless i asked to save markers or metadata in file types that didn't support such things, such as MPEG. I only see .sfk files when saving a media file that contains audio, regardless of whether any other options are included.

Or have i gone totally crazy?

I'm with you, Kelly. I'm seeing .sfk files just as I always have. Whenever I add a clip that contains audio to the timeline, I get an .sfk file generated.

When you R E N D E R you get the SFL files. That's what the question is about, NOT SFK files. Is there a way to turn off the creation of SFL files? (Again, NOT the audio SFK files!)
