Subject:Save problems in SF w/ low quality aiff files

I use Sound Forge (6.0e, not XP) for editing. A little while ago, I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything on my computer. After doing so, I started having problems getting loop markers and the midi unity note to save in my samples. I've reformatted and reinstalled everything before, and never had problems like this. I always make sure that "Save metadata with file" is checked when saving. I also tried switching to Cool Edit for saving the midi unity note and loop points in my samples, but it gave me the same results as Sound Forge. I even tried a trial version of Sound Forge 8.0, and it didn't fix the problem. Therefore, I think it is the settings on my computer that are screwing things up.

To elaborate, the samples I make must be 21,024Hz 8 bit aif files. An odd sampling rate, but necessary. I've experimented, and if I change the sampling rate first and drop the bit depth last (the proper way to do it), then the loop points disappear after saving and the midi unity note reverts back to C5 (the standard). If I drop the bit depth first, then resample, it saves correctly. Of course, I can't do it that way or else I lose sound quality. This problem only happens with aif files. I've done the same experiments on wav files and they save without a hitch. Another strange thing is, if I reinstall Sound Forge again, it saves correctly with the first few samples. Then, it's like it decides it doesn't want to save properly anymore, and from then on, it doesn't.

I've heard that Sound Forge has issues with odd sampling rates, but I've never heard a solution. Even so, Cool Edit has the same problems. I really don't want to switch to anything else anyway, because I'm quite comfortable with Sound Forge. I have Googled like mad and asked several people about this problem and so far no one knows a solution. if anyone could help me, they would be doing me a great favor. I use Sound Forge for commercial work, and I have deadlines, so this problem has to be fixed or I'm up the creek.

Thanks in advance!
Eric

Hello Eric,

I just tried testing using the steps that you've described using Sound Forge 8.0b. I cannot seem to repro. Both the loop markers and the MIDI unity note keep when saved as an 8-bit, 21,024 Hz AIFF file.

If you'd like, you can send me one of your samples to see if I can repro that way. Use my "RodelWorks" link below to contact me. (Also, if you need help in meeting your deadline, I'm currently available; I'd be willing to help without compensation. I'm that way. Sometimes. :) )
