Acid Pro5 + AW16G + FW410 Bad Sync -ACID Product Family

The playback from the AW16G is totally eratic, non existant some of the time.... then the time counter on the AW catches up, it plays some of the recorded stuff, then cuts out again. Then the PC crashes. I have checked the frame rates correspond and have tried alternative rates. The AW is linked to the 410 via midi (out of 410 into AW) and by optical in and out. I have tried slaving under MTC and MMC. The 410 sync source is set to External Optical.... If I set it to Internal Optical then I get sporadic crackles through the monitors. Has anyone succeeded in syncing this stuff together?
