Subject:SF6 freezes up with Echo Audio card?

I don't know if this is a SForge problem, but I'd appreciate any responses. I'm using SForge 6.0e, build 237.

I recently replaced my Aardvark audio card with a Echo Audio Mia Midi card. When I try to record (actually doing a digital transfer from a DAT player), SForge freezes up. Sometimes the Sforge recording process will work fine for only a few minutes, sometimes much longer, but it always freezes up eventually.

It's a complete freeze up; Ctrl-Alt-Delete has no effect; I must reboot.

I've verified that the Echo audio card has its own IRQ.

thanks for any help.

Are other sound cards installed? Echo audio cards/ drivers are real stable... as is Sound Forge-6... so that's odd.
What are your settings on the Echo control panel.? There are different drivers & settings for Echo cards. (WDM or VxD) Be sure you have the correct one intalled and selected for your OS. (XP, 2000, 98, ect.)
See the Echo website and download the correct... and latest driver.

Or... try a , un-install re-install or SF-6.

If you're recording via S/PDIF, ensure that the MiaMIDI is slaving to the DAT. (You do this under "input clock" in the Echo Console. Select "S/PDIF" instead of "Internal.")

Echo cards only work with Intel chipsets (if you have an Intel CPU). If you have an AMD CPU, I think they say VIA chipsets work, maybe another. It's on their website somewhere.

This is a symptom of an echo card and a non-intel chipset, I know from experience.

Bastinado, you are correct. Echo Audio finally confirmed it today it in an email. I could find no disclosure of this fact anywhere on their website, nor is it in the manual that comes with the Mia Midi card.

What's really bothersome is that I emailed Echo support before I bought this card and asked if there were any known problems and they replied: "nope".

First I'm a victim of the Aardvark Audio disaster and now this. Nice.

The issue pertaining to certain setups is here at Echo's Web site.

Personally, I wouldn't use an AMD system for audio work. They may give more bang for the buck, but their dodgy history with audio hardware suggests otherwise.

just to counter, i've been running an AMD chip on an nforce2 mobo in my daw for 2 years now, and i've experienced no troubles working with audio at all really. if there was a problem it was always OS/driver related.

btw i wasn't aware that MiaMidi has potential issues on an AMD based system. that kind of sucks, cause i was planning to swap my Delta 2496 for the Echo card...oh well.

Your comment above illustrates how rumors start. Echo cards DO NOT have problems with "AMD based systems." They have *some* problems with certain chipsets. I've never used anything but Laylas (owned one the first 100 that was manufactured) since building my first DAW many years ago. Today and several DAWs later - I have ONLY used AMD systems with no problems whatsoever. If you do a little research you will see that there is a significant move towards AMD in the pro audio world - even some die hard PT-mac users have made this switch. The problematic "history" that mD spoke of is simply old news has not been an issue for several years now.
