File -> Properties -> Jacket Picture

But from what I've heard, the feature isn't 100%. Apparently DVDA sizes the picture incorrectly or something.

I've never seen this happen with any DVDs including Hollywood releases. In all of my DVD players pressing the stop button always goes to the player's logo screen.

Thank you for that quick reply. So far at least in DVDA the aspect is correct but we'll see when I prepare the DVD.

If you are using a digital camera image (square pixels) for a jacket picture you will need to resize the image to 720x480 before importing into DVDA-3. If you don't resize the image it will be it will look fine in Preview but squeezed horizontally on the DVD. It appears DVDA-3 is not be applying the correct pixel aspect ratio to the image.

Ok I did create the image in Photoshop at 720x480 and resized the image to fit that and it looks great! I wish Sony could have made it a little easier to find to create the Jacket picture feature for the DVD but now that I know where to find it all the better!

Chienworks I just tested it out on my Sony DVD player in the livingroom and when you hit stop it now goes to the Jacket picture instead of the Sony player logo...Way Cool! Everyone run out and get a Sony player. Actually I recommend these to all my customers when they are having difficulties playing DVD's or looking for a new one.

Kelly, apparently this is a DVD player-dependent feature, and it seems that many players don't support it.

*shrug* If you search DVDA3's online help (pres F1 or choose Help from the menu) and search for "jacket picture," it tells you exactly how to do it. The full manual does, too. Haven't seen the quick manual, as I bought DVDA3 as a download.

The quick manual just shows a little icon of the button you are to press but does not tell you where to find that button. Yes I could have looked through the pdf manual but thought this would be quicker....sorry if this bugged you?
bStro wrote on 6/15/2005, 8:22 AM
You didn't bug me.

My comment about the manual was not in response to you asking the question, but rather in response to you saying that the feature (or answer to your question) is too hard to find when it's right there in the manual / online help.

Feel free to ask questions -- I'm happy to answer them when I can.

Thanks Rob, I agree that it was listed in the pdf manual and had I looked there I would have found the answer. To be honest I have never used this part of either Sonic Foundry or Sony software as I have usually just asked the question online. It helps me then and also any others like me who have not dived head first into the software and are looking to get up and running fast. I'm sure I'll have more questions later but for now everything is looking pretty good!

DVD Architect 3.0 and 3.0a currently don't render the aspect ratio of jacket pictures correctly. This will be resolved in an upcoming update.
StormCrow wrote on 6/17/2005, 6:01 AM
Thanks Sony! When I previewed the jacket picture on my computer it was the correct 720x480 and when I watched the rendered and burned DVD on my TV it was still correct but when I projected that same DVD the top edge of the jacket picture had a small white band going all the way across as if the picture did not fill it up all the way?

There's a guide at VideoHelp on this subject. You can try it ;)
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/148301.php

BTW, I've tried the guide and burning a DVD with a Jacket Picture was absolutely perfect (following the guide and/or preparing and burning with DVDA). Don't know why the administrator said DVDA doesn't render jacket pictures correctly ( I do apologize if I have missed something), but he may have remarked that DVDA doesn't render jacket pictures correctly if the ofiginal files (targa, jpg, jpeg, etc...) are out of the correct 720x480 aspect ratio. I've checked the folder JACKET_P myself and all files are correctly rendered and within correct aspect ratios of 720x480; 176x112 and 96x64. You have to make sure all mpeg files are named this way (do not write the extensions .MP2 720x480 ntsc; .MP2 176x112 ntsc; .MP2 96x64 ntsc):

J00___5L
J00___5M
J00___5S

Please note that 5L is for 720x480; 5M for 176x112 and 5S for 96x64.
You can follow that guide above or you can also try preparing and burning your files with DVDA one of these 2 ways:

ONE
1.Make sure your jacket picture is at 720x480;
2.Prepare your regular project without the jacket picture;
3.Prepare another small project (just an mpeg file, can be anyone + a menu and of course, your jacket picture);
4.Copy this project's folder JACKET_P and paste it to the folder where you had previously prepared your first project. That's it.

TWO
Same thing for steps 1. and 2.;
3.Burn the prepared folder with DVDA.

Both ways are working and in fact you don't even need the first one :) (I was just testing)

It works for me. My top player is a Sony and it shows Jacket Pictures correctly, even though I don't know if all the other players do it too. Don't know why you have experienced the white band when you project your DVD as you have remarked since all the mpeg files are correctly rendered. Please check if other commercial DVDs have the same problem when projected but one thing is certain, this has nothing to do with DVDA. it must be a problem with the projector....
If you resize your pictures to 720x480 before adding the Jacket Picture, DVDA won't have any problem with Jacket Pictures. Point!

In case anyone is interested. One example of a jacket picture from on a Hollywood disc is the X-Men DVD (v1.0). When you press the stop button it should show the X-Men logo rather than your player's logo. (If your player is compliant).

I suppose you could also use the comptuer and look on a disc for the JACKET_P folder.

I had an old Toshiba 2nd generation player that was compliant. Now I have to modern players (a JVC and Coby) that don't show the logo.

Toshiba was always good in the beggining at having the best standards compliance and rendering engines.

DVDA-3 release 3.0b will accept digital photo (square pixels) and create the correct aspect ratio for the jacket picture. It is not listed as a fix in the release notes but it is. :) Give it a try.

Cool! Thanks for reviving this thread to clarify.

Thanks for the input. Anyway, I always resize my pictures in Photoshop first at 720x480 because I apply some filters such as Gaussian blur or whaterver I want. :-)
