I have searched for this problem without success, and sent a message to support. Wondering if anyone out there recognizes the following error messages. Purchased/download 5/6/2005 During installation, I get the message: "MediaManagerSqlrapper.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging SER Application has generated an exception that cannot be handled. Process id=0x57c(1404), Thread id=0x7d4(2004)" AFTER that, installation proceeds and I get the message: "Sony Media Manager Successfully Installed. After restarting the computer then starting ACID, during load I get the error message: "An error occurred while initializing the Media Manager. This feature will be unavailable. Media Manager initialization failed." I have tried uninstalling, and reinstalling several times. I have deactivated all fire walls, no other software running. Side note: Computer brand hp m1080n Hope somebody can help, thanks. |

First, did you have any previous version / or Vegas Installed on your computer before trying to install Acid ? Then, is your .Net Framework installed on your computer and up to date ? In Add/Remove program, from the Control Panel, do you see any "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine" item ? Thanx. |

1. No previous ACID, but have Vegas 5 2. .Net Framework 1.1 and 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) 3. Yes: Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Sony_Mediamgr) Thanks for responding so quickly |

The first thing that might be an issue, is that you have Vegas 5 installed previously to Acid 5 that in some case we've seen on this forum, seems to be problematic. Here is Susan's (Sony) workaround. Try it out, then reply to tell us if it worked or not : First, uninstall anything related to Sony's products (Media Manager 2.0, Vegas & Acid). Then, here's SonySCS workaround : ___ Yes, there is an issue with Vegas 6, ACID 5 and Media Manager: Vegas 6.0 installs Media Manager 2 but ACID 5 is looking for the older version. These steps 1. Install Vegas 6.0a (which will install MM 2.0) 2. Install ACID 5.0a and immediately run it to try it out Get error message "The Media Library XYZ has a newer format that is not supported by this version of software." The fix is to run Vegas at least once and then re-run ACID. [...] I mentioned ACID 5.0a specifically. This is the version that should be used with Vegas 6. HTH, Suzan ___ |

Well..... My frustration level has peaked for this weekend. I'm going to a bar-b-que. Anyway, I tried your suggestion, and a few others without success. Everything on my computer is up to date. I tried installing ACID after uninstalling everything else, figuring that it should work as a stand-alone package. Get the same error results. Otherwise, ACID appears to work. It plays the demos, and I can use the softsynth, but I cannot find the loop library -- even though it was extracted. Everything I have read so far in the manual seems to depend upon the Media Manager. I am using VEGAS 5.d, and DVDArch 2.0, and these seem to operate as expected throughout these experiments. Oh, well. I guess I'll just have to get a hold of Sony Customer Service. Thanks for trying to help. If I find the solution (or given the solution), I will post the results. What is your Windows language set to? Look in Control Panel > Regional and Language Options. 1. Verify the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine is installed. Need to verify this in two steps: (a) Use Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and look for Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SONY_MEDIAMGR). (b) If the engine is listed as installed, verify that the service is actually installed and can be run. Use Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services utility. Look for a service named MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR. If it is listed, try to start it. Does it give any errors? If either of these fail, see the reinstall steps below. 2. Verify the Media Manager is installed. Use Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and look for Sony Media Manager 2.0. If either of these fail, see the reinstall steps below. 3. Check the application directory for a .log file. When the Media Manager runs within ACID or Vegas, it creates a text log file in the application directory. The default locations would be: C:\Program Files\Sony\ACID Pro 5.0\acid50.log C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas 6.0\vegas60.log These can be helpful as they usually capture details which can help us track down what is failing. Note that these files can be difficult to find given the default Windows Explorer behavior of hiding known file extensions and instead using a different a different icon. Typically with a clean Windows XP install, Explorer will just show Vegas60 or Acid50 as a “Text Document” w/ a notepad icon – right alongside the actual Vegas60 or Acid50 “Application”. Reinstalling Notes Uninstall ACID Pro 5.0 and/or Vegas 6.0 Uninstall Sony Media Manager 2.0 (if listed) Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SONY_MEDIAMGR) Uninstall Sony Sound Series Loops and Samples Reference Library if installed. Completely delete the Media Manager directory. Normally this is C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager. Reboot (seriously) Try to close any running applications (esp. those in the system tray) – the SQL server portion of the install can be touchy regarding other running applications. Run the ACID or Vegas installer. The SQL Server Desktop Engine portion of the install can hang if other applications are running. This was more of a problem with ACID Pro 5.0, but we fixed some things since then that should make this a rarer situation. Don’t forget system tray utilities. Try to minimize the number of apps running. |

Re: ForumAdmin Post: You mention a few steps and logs that I have not tried yet. I will give them a try right away. ONE thing that does bother me, though, is that after UNinstalling and COLDbooting, then unpacking the installation files, I am given the option of keeping, or replacing duplicate files. I usually select REPLACE ALL. Don't understan why files are still present. I was in touch with Kimberly at Sony Support. She sent me a batch file which was supposed to supply the proper arguments durng the installation process. It also created a log file. Unfortunately, her fix did not work so I sent the log file to her -- it's quite long -- so I am waiting. Thanks. I'll keep trying. |

Ohm, my friend, I'm having the same problems that you are with the Media Manager. I've been screwing around with this for a couple of weeks now and it's starting to piss me off! The uninstall and reinstall routine has got me cross-eyed, but I can't give up on it. This has been a MAJOR interrption in my workflow! MAJOR!!! If and when I get it figured out I'll sort through my notes and give you a heads-up. |

Technical support has a new diagnostic tool for troubleshooting media manager installation and initialization issues. It sounds like you may be a good candidate for it. Also, try using ACID Pro 5.0b which was released last week. |

I'm having problems with Media Manager as well. I installed 6.0a from CD and received an error that the MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service does not exist... The Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine doesn't appear to have installed correctly. It doesn't show up in the Add/Remove Programs list. Sony Media Manager 2.0 and Vegas 6.0b do appear in the programs listing. Checking in Services there's no MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service running. Here's the text from the .log file: [Log Started] 2005-05-24 21:36:25,938 [3868] FATAL Sony.MediaSoftware.MediaMgr.AssemblyLoad [] - AssemblyLoad.Initialize() failed with an unhandled exception. Exception: Sony.MediaSoftware.MediaMgr.MediaMgrException Message: The database service failed to initialize properly (MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR). AcidPro5.b did not ressolve my issue. I get the same error as before. After selecting the description box, the message reads: "Unable to create Media Manager object." I forwarded this to Kimberly at support. Waiting for reply. Thanks for trying to help |

I had a similar problem using Windows XP Pro. I finally resolved it in the following manner: 1. Give the User Administrator privileges. 2. Install ACID 3. Reboot and log in as user and launch ACID (just to make sure Media Manager will load) 4. Change User from Administrator to Power User and reboot. I had a similar (maybe not excatly the same) problem. After a bit of research and exploration, I did a repair of my Microsoft Office application. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the Vegas and related software. That appears to have done the trick. For me, I apparently had an SQL file that was hosed! |

Frankly, I gave up on Media Manager and hope that Sony fixes this in an update of Acid. I never asked for this feature and worked about an hour on it. Now, I just turned it off. It would be nice if a company beta tested their software to make sure it runs on different machines etc. For now, all I can say, is good luck to you! Take Care |

Well, I saw Rednroll reporting the same problem on the KVR forums and Sony fired him from being a beta tester. Maybe that's a pretty good reason it slipped by. |

Well, I saw Rednroll reporting the same problem on the KVR forums and Sony fired him from being a beta tester. Maybe that's a pretty good reason it slipped by. Brian was banned, period; as a result, his beta testing privileges were revoked. I don't know why, and it's really none of my business. Becoming a beta tester is a privilege, not something SPD hires or fires you for. Has anyone looked further into their systems? (Software installed, config?) It might be prudent to employ a brute force method and format the system and try starting clean just to see if it works. Windows XP and 2000, good OSs that they are, are still prone to accumulating junk over time. Question: Are these Media Manager install problems associated with SP2 not being installed? Thanks, drbam |

Well two things: 1) Screwed up my system about 2 months ago and did a complete reinstall of WinXP. Have very little extraneous junk on the computer now and as noted in my earlier post, Media Manager doesn't work. 2) Installed SP2 when I reinstalled XP. I think Acid5 and Media manager are just buggy as all get out! Take Care |

I don't know about magic, but count your blessings. I occasionally try some of the suggestions listed on the many threads here about media manager (I am not delving into the registry on this one!!) and none of them have worked. Sooooo, I continue to hope Sony actually fixes their software. BTW, I disagree a bit. I am not sure about the specifics of the beta-tester mentioned earlier, but I don't see being a beta tester as a privledge. You are doing free work for the company and if you do it with due diligence, you save them a lot of money, time and resources. This isn't a comment about a specific tester, IMHO it is important to remember that beta testers are doing important work for free. If that's a privledge, my house needs painting!!! Take Care |
