Hey, all are welcome here! You lost me a bit though, do you mean comparing one clip to another in a sort of split screen side by side comparison? This is a good way of matching shots together. If this is what you mean, then yes, Vegas will do this and it's very easy.
I'm happy to give you a description, but first let me know if this is what you're after.

yes this is exactly what I mean!!!, but how can you do this?
musman wrote on 6/13/2005, 10:31 PM
Very easy.
1- Put your timeline cursor on one of the 2 clips you want to compare.
2- Just above the preview window, click the button directly to the left of the disk symbol. This will save a 'snapshot to your clipboard'.
3- Put your cursor on the 2nd of the clips to compare.
4- click on the dropdown menu 3 places to the left of the clipboard icon, select 'clipboard' from the dropdown menu.
5- go back to the same dropdown menu and select either left or right (or toggle b/t the two).
If you haven't already tried them, a quick lesson on reading video scopes also helps with this kind of work. That said, my colorist at the lab where my latest film was processed and transfered goes pretty much solely by sight now.
Good luck!

this is a good tip, thanks... but final cut pro's ones is fastest... maybe in vegas 7.0... ;-)

Sure, it's just that everything else is slower in FCP...

When Vegas was demoed at a local FCP User's Group meeting here, members were shocked at how quickly things could be done in Vegas compared to FCP.

Still, there will always be something left to do...

When I meet users of Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro, I try to explain how Vegas is faster and has better audio capabilities. They just don't believe it and never take me up on offers to come over to my studio for a demonstration. Perhaps they should rename Vegas to "Vegas Professional". It probably won't help though, Mac and Adobe users will probably still think it is not professional software because it is too easy and quick to use.

hey, send that in as a suggestion! The "product suggestion" section is under the "support" menu uip top.

That's a GREAT idea!

Ok gonna play devil's advocate here...

Certain things in Final Cut are very fast. For example, a dual 2.3ghz G5 can do (in real-time):
>5 gaussian blurs on one clip (!!!) - the only blurs are not so optimized and you can only get one of them RT.
3w Color corrector (primary only) - a lot
3w Color corrector (secondary, no defocus/blur key) - ok I forget, but it's also a lot.
3w Color corrector (w defocus) - 0; It's not real-time in Vegas either, and it takes a lot more time to setup in Vegas.

I can checkout unsharp mask and chroma smoothing on a different G5 system if anyone's interested. Chroma blur in Vegas is so slooooow.
I can also checkout garbage matte.

One thing that sucks about FCP is that there is no curves filter built-in. There are 3rd party ones available, but they are not that adjustable compared to Vegas'.

As far as still store / reference, Final Cut's is better. This might be a little hard to describe.

2- Vegas is still my favorite editing program :), although it may be because I don't own a FCP system and hence I may not know little tricks for it.

3- Coursedesign: What parts about Vegas did FCP users find faster?

4- jbuadrand:
Maybe a workaround would work for you?
Render your whole project to a new track.
Just trim the top clip and slide it along the timeline to compare. You can also add markers into the clip for important frames/looks.

Glennchan:
totally agree with you!!!
My brother using FCP every day at work, and Vegas at home, according to him: vegas gives you a lot of freedom but FCP got a lot of tools that make life easier on basic editor's life (especially color correction)
