Subject:Sound Forge 8a...

I have just updated from SF 8 to 8a and noticed that (Echo's Mia sound card - Driver 6.08, WinXP SP2, Pentium iV) if I select either WDM or "Pure Wave" using Windows Classic Wave Driver, whenever I select a plug-in (either DX or VST) and try to preview the meters in SF do not move and I get no sounds. It normally plays alright the wav files, it is only the preview that do not work. ASIO is working fine and if I select Microsoft Sound Mapper it also works ok but then the game card (a Sound Blaster) is used instead. I did not notice this limitation with the first version of SF 8.
Any one using Echo's sound cards noticed this?

Yes, I have an Echo Layla 3G.

When using "Pure Wave" mode in the Echo Driver and SF8.0a is set to "Windows Classic Wave Driver" there is no sound in preview in all the plugins I tried (about 3). It does work to play from the time line. If you use "ASIO Echo" in SF8a preview works with the Echo driver in pure wave mode (which bypasses the windows kernel sound driver).

"WDM" in the Echo driver + Windows Classic Wave in SF8a preview does work. Playing from the timeline works in all cases.

Using an Echo MiaMIDI here with the 6.08 drivers in Sound Forge 8.0a. I don't see those issues with either PureWave ASIO or PureWave WDM.

Did anyone try completely uninstalling Sound Forge and installing using only the 8.0a update? (It actually acts as the full version; you just have to have your serial key handy.)

Iacobus and Bastinado,
Yes I re-installed both the Echo driver and SF 8a, no difference, still no preview sound in Windows Classic Wave Driver (funny it works for Bastinado in WDM but not for me). Is your computer a pentium IV and are you using WinXP SP2? Maybe thats the difference.

Hi Bastinado,
Guess what, whether I confused things before or the re-installing of SF 8a and Echo driver solved part of the problem I do not know. But I have just checked again and my problem is now exactly the same as yours:
Windows Classic Wave Driver and WDM in the Echo driver - preview works alright
Windows Classic Wave Driver and Pure Wave in the Echo driver - preview does not work.
Also, I too have WinXP SP2 + (fully updated) in a Pentium IV. Is your motherboard intel (mine is).

I would call this a confirmed, reproduceable bug now. I have an ASUS mobo with intel 865 chipset.

We are currently investigating this issue. For the moment, you can try one of the following adjustments as a workaround.

1) in Options->Prefs->Audio, increase "Playback buffering (seconds)", 0.20 should be enough
-or-
2) on the Advanced Page, select the playback device/port of interest and drop the number of buffers to 2
-or-
3) in the Echo console, reduce the PureWave buffer size (1024 samples should do the trick)

Thanks.

I have an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe mobo with an Intel 865PE chipset. Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz) with XP SP2 and all latest updates. Trying like gangbusters to repro but can't seem to do it.

I did disable some general things, like disabling Windows XP theme support and the splash screen (via the General tab under Options > Preferences).

I have an ASUS P4P800-VM mobo, 865 chipset though I don't know what model 865, likely the same as mD. P4 3.2 GHz.

My SF8.0a was updated from an 8.0 installation, I also had Vegas 6.0a and DVDA 3.0. Updated Vegas to 6.0b last night but didn't test this, probably won't get back to it for a week or so since I'm going on vacation. This is on a clean XP install - I just rebuilt my system; in fact am not finished installing all of my apps yet.

Echo does state they only support Intel chipsets with Intel CPUs which leads me to believe their PCI implementation doesn't meet the specification - or that that non-Intel chipsets don't when used with Intel CPUs. For AMD CPUs I think they say Via chipsets, not sure. I know from personal experience that an Intel CPU and ATI chipset doesn't work with the Echo MIA.

I have just tried workaround No. 1 (increase playback buffer to 0.20) proposed by ForumAdmin and it works fine!
Thanks,
