When saving a file to mp3 128k seems to be the highest bitrate possible. Am I missing something in trying to save a file at at least 256/44k?

Mono files max out at 128 kbps. Stereo files can have higher bitrates.

A 128kbs mono and 256kbs stereo are compressed the same amount, and are of equal quality (and file size) accept of course latter is stereo.
Same relation applies to a 64kbs mono and 128 stereo.

I use Lame-rc3 to encode high res mono mp3s.

Lame goes to 320, which in mono would equal a 680kbs stereo.
Confused yet?
