Subject:Automatically find, mark and trim tracks??

Howdy everyone!

Looks like a great site!

I am new to Sound Forge 8 (but not to audio editing)--so, please be gentle! :) I did some searches on the topic but the closest match I could find dates back to 2000.

So my question: In recording from vinyl, I'd like the software to automatically find (mark) tracks and export them as sequentially numbered WAV or MP3 files.

In my searches (and in help files), it looks like markers must be entered manually, then converted to regions. The whole process looks quite laborious.

Surely there's a way to do this--as I have a $30 off-the-shelf software package that can do it :)

Additionally, is there a way to trim some of the "dead air" between tracks at the same time? Are we entering the realm of scripting here--and if so, does anyone out there have a sample? I can envision doing some batch processing here--including trim & normalize--but that's "down the road."

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about the dead air issue, but I would personally rather place the markers myself just because I could probably do a better job than any "automatic" function.

There's a "convert markers to regions and extract" script (under Tools > Scripting) but it doesn't sequentially number the extracted regions (rather it labels by time with the original file's name as a prefix).

Thanks for the quick response, lacobus!

I know what you mean, re placing the markers yourself. Seems like I always ended up re-doing it somewhat anyway (at least with the cheapo software).

I tried doing some of what you suggest (convert markers to regions). I got way more files than tracks. And I found it somewhat difficult to control marker numbers as well.

I did run into similar issues--the extracted regions were by time (and again, way too many of them). There must be a better way. It might involve scripting.

Thanks again for the quick response!

You're welcome! :o)

Did you try posting in the Sound Forge scripting forum yet? Anyone that writes code there could certainly help you out more than I could.

(My coding skills are extremely rudimentary. I am a musician after all. :) )

Hey Sound Dog,

Check out the Tools > Auto Region function too.

Thank you both for your responses.

I will try posting to the Scripting forum.

I did (briefly) look into Auto Region. No doubt I will be delving deeper as I go.

Thanks again. I appreciate your input and look forward to "visiting" on another post!
