OT: Your next PC will probably have an AMD CPU

Really interesting and lengthy article over at Tom's Hardware says that the latest trend in high-performance computing, dual-core, will be hitting the streets this summer. Comparing the offerings from Intel and AMD, the conclusion is that AMD not only runs substantially faster, but also much cooler.

I wonder who will be the first to break the RenderTest 1-minute barrier?

Update: Just saw this article over at ExtremeTech that basically says the same thing. In fact, they said the AMD chip outpaced the Intel chip even in a test where the Intel chip was liquid-cooled and overclocked by 25%!

Get ready for a bit of sticker shock, though: pricing in quanties of 1,000 will be around $1,000 EACH.

Gads zukes.
I WAS hoping to purchase a new computer for HDV editing withing 45 days. But now, with the new awesome technology coming out, I can't see buying "old" speed. Nor can I see going for the brand new stuff that costs that much. So I have to wait for probably 4-6 months to let those prices drop a little before I can afford a system that I'll be happy holding onto for the next 2 years or so.
Makes me wonder what computers will be like in 2 years. The mind boggles.

mjroddy, your situation looks to me to be yet another reason to go with AMD. Buy a single-core Socket 939 system now, and just upgrade the CPU when they come out later this year.

I'm glad AMD appears to be sensitive to the need of upgraders like us who can't afford to buy whole new systems every year or two.

Matthew...
I can't say why....but wait just a tad longer. Less than a month.

Spot: You said the same thing to me regarding the Sony HD monitors back in February. Is the time right now? And what models were you refering to?

Cheers,

Michael

PS. Tommorow is my birthday and I got another crate of that Champagne.

The X2 should be shipping at ~$520 for the 4200+ version, or so I've read. It's the 4800+ version that will have the ridiculous pricetag initially.

hmmm..... a dual-core Sempron that fits in a Socket A mobo?

A guy can dream, can't he? ;-)

Spot, I think you also said "wait..." when we were talking about portable audio flash recorders.

You ARE a man of mystery! Kind of like the Oracle of Delphi... faintly encouraging, but cryptic. ;-)

NDA until the HDV Solutions tour prevents me from saying anything. I wish I could. I'm buying one myself.

I'm thinking that a DUAL AMD board is a better price point right now. And it performs pretty close to the dual-core and is faster in some cases.
