There really isn't a rule concerning which plugin format is better, although those with a vested interest in a particular technology might disagree with me. They're really just different interfaces between a host platform and add-in processors. VST is certainly easier to create code for IMHO.

If there is a problem with a particular plugin's performace or efficiency, it probably has more to do with the implementation of the algorithm than the format it was created for.

Vegas & Sound Forge have been using Direct X much longer.

If you have a choice and price isn't a factor, go with Direct X.

Most times, when you buy a plugin it comes with all formats. You might try and experiment on your system to see if you have better performance with one over the other. I'd be interested to see your results.
