Multi user Media Manager (Client/Server use)?

Can the Media Manager be used by more than one computer? What I mean is, since it is SQL (MSDE) could more than one user access the database? If not this would be great for editing workgroups to have a central database to keep track of all their media assets. This is what I was thinking it was going to be used for when announced but I hadn't seen anything pertaining to this or playing around with it myself.

Or why not give the option to go to a full blown SQL server edition and use a dedicated server to manage media assets that all the vegas users could access through vegas. That would be sweet as hell and you could then off load the burden of having the database bog down the editing systems.

Maybe a third party could write something like this and sell it as an add-on for businesses that could use something like this.

Right now the database technically can be used by multiple people at once, but be aware that, as with media files, last save wins.

Workgroup functionality is definitely something we have our eye on...

I'll clarify that. The Media Manager can be used by multiple applications at the same time, but on a single PC (and the MSDE instance has to be on the same PC).

For example, you can run multiple copies of Vegas and ACID and they all can have the same media library open.

Extending this to multiple PCs is something we are evaluating.

What sort of security between users would you expect of a workgroup media library? Is simple "read only" vs. "read write" enough? Or do you need a lot more fine grained "this user can add stuff and tag, but not delete, this user can do anything", etc.

Cool so in the future you "may" have more support for workgroups? Seems to me this would definitley set it's self apart from other NLE's as far as colaboration on projects go.

For instance yoo are working with a long form project with a couple of other people and as they add new media to the data base all you would have to do is query the database and boom drop it on the timeline.

That would be nice. Also it would be cool to have a standard SQL and a standalone server for file serving purposes.

What I think would be cool would be if you could have a central file server that acts as the SQL server and holds all of the actual media in a central file share directory. IE. have a \\server\media\ then project folders.

I edit on my main machine across a gigabit link in real time this I think would be the way to go. I keep all of my captured media and render back to the file server as well.

read only and read write I think would be sufficient for most people, just render to something new if you need too.

Though now thinking about it, it would be pretty nice to have that type of control over the asset's but for me that would be just icing on the cake. I would only see that necessary in very big workgroups, maybe make this a premium version or something for those that that type of control.
