PT LE vs Vegas...Vegas wins actually for me...

scottshackrock wrote on 4/25/2005, 9:14 PM
Well I finally got a real chance to sit down and use PT LE. I DEFINATELY like using Vegas a LOT LOT better. ha

The work flow is such a better design, in my opinion. Maybe I would really like PT if I had 2 monitors set up, so the mixer window is always open....but I like how there's basically mini mixers on each track in Vegas/other programs. That really speeds up the proccess so much more I think!

ha

However, there is one thing that I really like about PT. How you can kinda put tracks together..or should I say "takes." Like I'll have 6 vocal takes on the same track, and I can switch back and forth, and make the track that has pieces for all of the other 6, my final track that I like. I don't think vegas can do that..if it can, i've tried everything and am at a loss. But that's pretty helpful.

I'm sure there's other stuff I don't know about PT to make it easier, but after my first few uses now, I'm totally down with Vegas! haha.

No point to this thread really, other than a convorsation starter...ha

Vegas does takes! You can right-mouse-button drag a new file onto an existing event and choose "Add as Takes". You can then cycle through the takes with the T key, or right-mouse-button click on the event to bring up the Active Takes menu.

Another nifty feature is that you can select a loop region for playback, and while this is playing the talent can perform as many takes as you like and each cycle through gets saved as a take in that event.

I can't believe I never knew about the right-drag!!!! Thanks sooo much Chienworks :) :)

I always wondered if you could 'create' takes like this... ah, it certainly a wonderful thing! Was this added in a recent version or something? I think the last manual I actually read was version 2, heh...
Chienworks wrote on 4/26/2005, 9:03 AM
I'm pretty sure it's been in there since Vegas 3. I don't know about 2; the only time i used it was the Vegas LE 2 version and i never did much at all with it.

hm, wow. That officially rules. ha. I can't wait to try this out.

thanks guys! ha.
scottshackrock wrote on 4/26/2005, 9:57 AM
wait...

When I right click and drag, there is never an option to add as take. only move, copy, shuffle events, and cancel.

I can directly record over, but it seems awkward - automatically splitting the event, and recording over ONLY the piece that is highlighted, etc. haha..
Chienworks wrote on 4/26/2005, 10:15 AM
Scott, are you dragging it onto an event already on the timeline? That works for me.
James Young wrote on 4/26/2005, 10:47 AM
Yeah, it only works if you are dragging from the explorer/trimmer/media pool/etc...
scottshackrock wrote on 4/26/2005, 11:32 AM
ahh, I see.

I was dragging it from the timelime to another event on different track.

thanks guys.

awesome!!! Man I kept trying to ask for that feature and its been there the whole time LOL

Bloody hell!!! That is <very> cool. Big thanks Chienworks! Are you the only guy that knew about this? :) Amazing that this has been there all this time - I've certainly never seen it in the help.

Can't believe I didn't know about that whole context-menu - just being able to add multiple events across time from the Explorer is something I've always wanted Vegas to do. In fact I know someone that even wrote a script to do just that. And the add as takes thing too, great!

Another cool Vegas editing feature!

Some other ways to do this:

Open a clip/file in the trimmer or right click on an event in the main timeline and select "open in trimmer"

Now, what can you do:

- In the trimmer make a selection.
Left click on the selection and you can drag it to the time line
Right Click on the selection and drop it onto an existing event, you are presented a number of options in how you want to include it into the problem.
- In the trimmer, make a selection,
right click on the selection to bring up the context menu.
Select "Create subclip"
Go to the Media Pool
Locate the new subclip.
You can left or right drag to the time line.

- right click on an event with takes.
- choose "select active"
- You can preview your takes.

Lots of things are here. Lots to learn.

Ben, nahhhhh. I learned about it from someone else here in the forums years ago. Lotsa good intelligent and helpful folks here!

Oh, and always right-mouse-button click on everything! You'll find lots of good tools and toys that way.

Well it's funny, as I'm normally the guy teaching people I work with Vegas secrets and tricks. I'm a long time advocate of this software in the audio realm, and have been using it since its inception. Which makes it even nicer to learn a new Vegas nugget myself occassionally, especially when it's not, er, new.

Peter - very nice to see you around.

Also, for those who maybe didn't know, the "T" key cycles through an event's takes... so you could set up a looping time selection and pick the good take from a set, and perhaps split the event when a good take goes bad and hunt for a better take of the split section only. I believe Pipeline is a master of this technique.

Also 2: Takes are "stream agnostic", as in you can use them for video too... as with multiple cameras. Nested .veg too- you can treat a project as a take (V6 only)
H2000 wrote on 4/26/2005, 7:40 PM
Thanks for the tip on the looping and using the "t" key. That's great!
JamesHE wrote on 4/26/2005, 8:11 PM
I discovered the "t" key accidently while comping some vocal tracks one night. :P I've been using the takes for a while, just didn't know that shortcut.

hmm...

When you use "save as" ____ to save your .veg project and all of it's associated media files, does it save all the takes or just the active ones? I'd test it out myself but I'm away from my DAW. er.. NLE...
LMAO

"s", "t" and " ", as in not having to hit ANYTHING to autocrossfade are but a few things that make some other apps so unpalatable for me.
CDM wrote on 4/27/2005, 5:24 AM
it saves all the takes when you Save As...

even when you copy and trim.
