I am very new to the whole MIDI thing and I had a question. I just bought ACID and I hooked my midi keyboard up and started recording some MIDI. I am not sure exactally how to get different sounds out of it. I would like to use the sounds right in my keyboard but I dont know how. Also I used some of the sounds in ACID where it says soft synth, I am not even sure if that was what I needed to do but I did it any way, and when I played music on my keyboard and recorded it, it was behind what I was playing. I would press down on the key and it wouldnt make a noise untill a few secounds after. Someone help me please I have a project due in a class with this so I really need help fast!!!! |

If you want to use the sounds in your MIDI keyboard, at some point you have to plug the audio output of your MIDI keyboard into the audio input of your computer and record those sounds as an audio wave file. MIDI is just note on and note off information but not the sound. It is far easier to just use the DLS and VSTi Soft Synths because ACID can record these directory and all you need to do is connect your keyboard via MIDI as you have already done. You can find some excellent free VSTi soft synths to use. I have a list on the VSTi Instruments page on my web site. The reason your MIDI recording is delayed is because of latency. Latency is the time it takes from when and incoming MIDI note is seen, to the time your soundcard actually produces the note. Obviously, as you have seen, you want this to be a short as possible (under 12ms if possible) The way to reduce latency is to use soundcard drivers that are designed for low latency. Audio Streaming Input Output drivers (i.e., ASIO) are the preferred way in ACID. If your soundcard doesn’t have ASIO drivers, there is a generic driver that is available for free called ASIO4ALL which works very well. I use it on my laptop that only has a cheap AC97 motherboard sound chip and my latency is 11ms. ~jr Message last edited on5/7/2005 8:02:06 PM byJohnnyRoy. |

You can select the ASIO driver by going into: Options > Preferences > Audio and selecting your ASIO driver from the Audio device type dropdown box. ~jr |
