Rendering Issue

Okay, I can't figure this one out at all.

Been using Vegas 5. I set up a custom encode, which was basically, the Main-Concept 2, NTSC.. only changes I made was Best Quality and 2 Pass VBR.

When trying out Vegas 6. I set up the exact same thing...now DVDA 3 is telling me that it needs to recompress the file!!!

I've checked all the tabs between my original Vegas 5 setting and the new Vegas 6 setting...all exactly the same...

How can this be happening? When I encode in Vegas 6, with my Vegas 5 preset..works fine... When I change the Vegas 6 MC setting (Best + 2 Pass) it says it must recompress...

Here is the info for the new file (that must be recompressed)

Here is the info for the old file, that according to DVDA 3, does not need to be recompressed..

See why I'm baffled? What I really can't figure out, is when I select my Vegas 5 preset..it's works fine (in 6) but changing those 2 things in Vegas 6 w/o using my Vegas 5 preset, just won't work.

Some other tests I ran...
DVDA - 2 pass + Good Quality = no recompress
DVDA - Best Quality = no recompress
NTSC DVD - 2 Pass + Best Quality = needs recompress

For whatever reason..it appears to be limited to 2 pass on high quality..no matter what the output (regular NTSC or DVDA) output..

Any ideas? d:-)

I'm not able to repro this problem. Here is what I tried...

1. Opened a project in Vegas 6.
2. File | Render As...
3. Set 'Save as type' to 'MainConcept MPEG-2 (*.mpg)'
4. Set 'Template' to 'DVD Architect NTSC video stream'
5. Clicked 'Custom...'
6. On project page, set 'Video render quality' to 'Best'
7. On video page, checked 'Two-pass'
8. Clicked Ok
9. Clicked Save
10. In DVDA3, File | New...
11. Set 'Project video format' to 'NTSC (720x480)'
11. Choose 'Single Movie' and press Ok
12. Choose the file rendered in the above steps and pressed Open
13. File | Optimize DVD...
It shows the video as being compliant (i.e. 'Video 1 | Complaint' is 'Yes' for this asset).

I just don't get it. That's exactly what I'm doing and it's saying it needs to be recompressed.

Does it have anything to do with the fact that I haven't uninstalled Vegas 5 or DVDA 2?

Thanks for trying to replicate the problem....

No, whether Vegas5/DVDA2 is installed or not should have no effect.

One thing you should be aware of is that when a compliant video is used in an asset with more than one video track, it becomes non-compliant (i.e. non-compliant for multi-angle).

If you follow my steps _exactly_ (including steps 10-13), it says it needs to be recompressed?

I am at work right now and unable to reproduce, I will try when I get home.

I have not tried clicking single movie and will try that. (I still don't understand why it would work with the 5 preset, but not changing the settings on 6)

If it's a single movie, will I still be able to add other streams to the DVD? In other words... I have the main movie (no multi-angle or anything like that), a scene selection menu, and a special features menu with some other footage (no multi-angle)?

Now I need the day to be over, so I can give this a try!

Okay, I got home and did a test and the results were very very interesting. Adding each individual clip, by the method described above (new project - single movie....)they were all compliant. When adding them to a menu based product, they were sometimes compliant and sometimes not compliant.....

Here are the samples I made.
#1 - NTSC for Architect - Best - 2 Pass
#2 - NTSC for Architect - Best - 2 Pass (Set up under Vegas 5)
#3 - NTSC for Architect - Good - 2 Pass
#4 - NTSC DVD - Best - 2 Pass

When clicking on Menu-Based and adding 1clip...worked fine.
When clicking on Menu-Based and adding 2 clips..worked fine.
When clicking on Menu-Based and adding 3 clips, every additional clip added said it needed to be recompressed.

I tried adding every combination and it made no difference. One that was compliant the previous time, was uncompliant when added in the new dvd.

Keep in mind...they are about 6 megs each, so they certainly weren't being recompressed due to space limitations.

Any thoughts?

I have seen things like this with dvda2. I found that saving the DVDA project file, quitting DVDA, re-starting dvda and reloading the project fixed the problem! I have only seen it a few times though, 99.9% of the time it's ok.

Thanks ottowr... I was wondering if something like this would solve the problem. I wonder what is causing it? Unfortunately, these are busy times at work and I haven't had as much time as I want to mess around with DVDA3..

Thanks for the help. Truly appreciated!
