Subject:acid 4 question

I downloaded a led zeppelin midi file called no quarter. I opened it up in acid and was amazed at the accuracy in which it was written. Some people out there are talented. My question is how do I break it up into separate tracks or change a part. I opened up the piano roll and couldn't figure it out. If I changed the soft synth to another, it plays the whole song on that synth. I read the manual but its written in a different terminology than what I am used to.
What I am trying to accomplish is to change the mellotron part to a different synth because the one that is on the standard soft synth is horrible.

Also, There is no real learning curve it’s a terminology barrier starting with the glossary:)

Do you want to route different parts of the MIDI to different synths? If that's the case, you could select those parts and do a copy and paste onto a new MIDI track.

Go to View>Track Properties. On the General tab you'll be able to see the individual tracks (if there are any) in the midi file. Now click the list editor tab, you need to edit the program change message. Right click on the field under data 4 and select edit. You have to know which program change # matches the patch on your syth. Also. you can select different tracks by clicking the track drop down menu .

Phew! I'm hoping Acid 5 makes this a little more straight forward and recognizes patch names from various synths like the big boys.

There is a free OPT plugin that will help you do this quite easily. It’s called GeinieSys StolenTrack and can be gotten at silksound.com. You use the MIDI Editors... button in the Track properties to add this to the main MIDI track and then you add more blank MIDI tracks and add it to them too. Then just go back into the new MIDI tracks and go to the Stolentrack tab and select the Alien tab. (I know it’s a bit strange) Then select the main MIDI track as the Alien and all of its tracks will be displayed. Just select the track you want and press the "steal" button and the tracks will be moved into your current MIDI track. It’s actually a lot easier to do than explain.

What are you using for a Melotron VSTi? M-Tron? Tapeworm? Something else? (just curious ‘cuz I was thining of getting M-Tron and wanted to know how good it was)

that link did the trick. uh, the mellotron was created using, belive it or not the moog modluar V 1.2.

they got a free trial if you want to check it out. but belive me this is the real deal. I played one of those things years ago and this is as realistic as it gets. there is no digital stepping in the filters or any potentiometer on it. when you turn up the volume for the ocillators you han hear the overdrive thats comming out. just like if you owned the original. lately i have been thinking that i wished i had Midified my Memory Moog a long time ago:(

Sweet. I just picked up the Moog Modular V about a week ago and have been extremely impressed with it. I still have my Minimoog, Polymoog keyboard and Hammond B3 so we must be around the same age. I have some free VSTi’s that recreate that era listed on my web site. I also have the native Instruments B4 and can’t believe they got the harmonics correct when sounding more than one note. No sampler in the world can recreate that.

I wish there was a demo of the M-Tron so I could hear it. I’ve been using Tapeworm and Mellosound and they sound fairly good. I also found some mellotron samples that I plan to create a Kontakt or HALion instrument of when I get the time.

If you want to hear some impressive MIDI files, check out Yes MIDI Music Songs. You gotta listen to Close To The Edge. (if you’re into Yes). These guys put a lot of work into this. You won't believe it.

Where's the "Steal" button? The rest of the procedure seems to be functioning. StolenTracks loads in the original MIDI track and the inserted MIDI tracks. The Alien tab displays all the individual channels (tracks) from the original MIDI track but here's the sound of screeching brakes. I see no "Steal" button.

AP 4 BTW. It's not a show stopper, I was just fooling around with the plug and Acid, I have Sonar for splitting channels if I really needed to but I'm very curious as to where the button is. Nothing I see on the StolenTracks tab at all either on the My Tracks or Alien tabs. I un-docked the Track Properties applet, stretched it full-screen, right-clicked all over it, double clicked all over it, sneaked up on it... nothing.

Edit; I have a bunch of Yes MIDs, they are awesome, my fave is Perpetual Change, a ton of work there right down to all the time sig. changes. These guys must have spent the same hours I did as a youngster working out the parts. As a Brufford fan I was amazed the first time I heard what they had done with a MIDI file getting as close as they did.

The Steal button is at the bottom center of the dialog when you select an Alien track. (to the left of the Help button and right of the logo) If you don’t select a track it will be grayed out. Here’s what you do: on the Aliens tab of the track you want to copy to, click on the "*** SELECT ALIEN ***" bar/button and select the ACID track you want to steal from. You should now see all of the MIDI tracks listed under Track Name for that ACID track. Select the MIDI track you want to steal and press the Steal button at the bottom center of the dialog. That MIDI track will be moved to your current ACID track.

Ooops (red faced), JR, my bad.

I certainly got the procedure. I failed to drag out the plug-in window. Inexcusable on my part. In my defense, though lame, the bottom of the window was perfectly aligned with the "track/channels border". Lame on my part I know. I only use Acid on my internet PC with a 15" monitor and set to Large fonts... I should have known better.
