I have Spot's Editing Workshop for Vegas 5 and its an awesome book to have by you while learning. Havent even seen Instant Vegas in the stores around here so I cant comment on that one.

They're VERY different books.
Instant Vegas is task oriented "I wanna do this, turn to page XXX"
Vegas 5 Editing Workshop is more an indepth look, plus it has many resources on the included DVD.
Other folks will have to comment on what is "better," I can only comment on the differences.

I have Spot's book also, Vegas 5 Editing Workshop. It should come with Vegas as a second manual. It's worth every penny.
Now he'll have to rewrite it for Vegas 6? Oh, I forgot with Vegas 6 Spot is in the Boxs ;')

Vegas 6 book is indeed forthcoming, but not for just a little while yet....Gimme time to finish the Audio book! :-)
One funny aside....we were in the NAB bookstore today and the manager came up. She wanted to meet me and Mannie, because of how many books had my name on the cover. Today was the first time I've ever seen all the various books lined up in a row, and it was a little humbling or sickening, depending on your point of view. Yeah, it fed my ego a little to see so many Vegas and other books that I've written, co-written, or edited in one display. One doesn't think about the other books as each new book is finished.
It's really cool seeing how many books are out there; and Victor Milt's new Lighting DVD is right at the front of the store both because of Victor's reputation, and also because of how much a rarity it is. It's as large a store as a small Borders store, but it's ALL video or radio related. Don't miss the NAB Bookstore if you are here in Vegas.

Sounds like a bookstore I wish they would build around here.

I am definitely looking forward to Vic's book when I get some extra cash.

Congrats Spot on all of the success you have gained and best wishes for much more success in the future.

Spot - I noticed that Vics DVD is not yet for sale on the Vasst site - how long before it's available?

I was just getting ready to post my own inquiry as to whether or not this forum, or any other Vegas forum that you all know of, has voted on their favorite Vegas Books and/or training DVDs? There seems to be quite a few books and DVDs out there.

I just installed V5 and DVD Architect tonight, so, needless to say I'll be needing something that at the very least covers the basics (yes, I'll also RTFM) ;-) But I always like to complement my training with outside sources as they tend to have a view and perspective that isn't always covered in the manuals.

Plus, given that I just bought and installed V5, perhaps I'll be better off starting out fresh with a V6 upgrade and the latest training DVDs and/or books?

Thanks in advance,

~Shawn (aka, the guy that still intends to use Vegas even though his first forum post went completely south and degenerated into flames galore!)

On that note and perhaps 'OT'? Thanks to those that remembered the new guy in the forum and kept their cool, and for those that got seduced into debating... yes, I've been there, I'm definitely not better than, I just hope I don't do it anymore, and the only way to change anyone is to change ourselves, when someone says 'knock, knock' DON'T ANSWER THE DOOR, IT'S A TRICK! :-)

My tip for avoiding forum ego traps: Film, edit, film, edit, sleep, play, and say hello to friends and family. Or, if nothing else use the old adage: "would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy?"

Good post Shawn and welcome to the Wide Wide world of Vegas
Glad you chose to stick with it , you wont regret it !
As far as your last post going sour, trust me when I say that this garden we call the Sony forum has MANY more flowers than weeds.

The most awesome resource is the search feature of this forum. It is one of the main reasons I have stuck with Vegas from version 2 to 4.

There are a bunch of tutorial sites on the net. Each one provides some great info. Just go to the links page on VASST and follow trail.

I've read several of the books, each has its own shining areas.

I've attend a VASST live session and learned tons.

Then I got Gary's DVD's about 6 months later and learned some new stuff..

The NAB session are good too - and thanks to the boys from california, they will once again be available to those who cannot attend in person!

And of course this forum and the others are also great resources.

Sounds like they're all pretty good and serve perhaps somewhat different angles as Spot mentioned regarding his two offerings, my question/concern is should I wait for an upgrade to V6 before making any V5 book/DVD purchases, especially given that I just installed V5 yesterday (I would imagine most of what is in the V5 books/DVDs is applicable to V6 though..)
Spot|DSE wrote on 4/16/2005, 10:38 PM
Most of the information is applicable to Vegas 6 as well. NAB prices are as good as it gets, but Walmart.com has the same price on their website.

I learn faster thro' watching & listening.Gary's DVDs are simply good value.
