Subject:Recording issue/grief in SF8

I'm used to using SF7 to record from vinyl sources andat the same time multi-taks by surfing the net, writing emails etc. This has always worked fine.

Trying out version 8 I get freezes in other programs like IE or Outlook Express while recording - these frezzes cause gaps in the recordings I've made.

What has changed in this most basic of functions in 8 to cause this? Are there ways I can change this behaviour?

TIA. John.

I am experiencing the exact same thing. I've contacted Tech Support but had no reply yet. In addition, the Gap Detection settings aren't present on my right-click menu, so there's no way to be sure the recording is OK.

PS: I've reinstalled SF7 to use for recording.

What type of sound card do you have?

Could you please fill out your system specs in your profile?

You run Outlook Express and IE while recording !!!??? Obviously they shouldn't be freezing, but it's not commonly recommended to do anything else while recording.

sirshambling:

Could you please answer just the following questions?

How you are you recording? ASIO , Wave Classic, or Mapper in Forge?
What is your buffer playback size set to?
If using ASIO, what is your sample buffer size (in ms or samples)?
Do you have your system sounds active and assigned to your Audigy?
What sample rate and bit depth are you recording at?

Peter

Peter,

Thank you for taking an interest in my problem.

I've tried all 3 - ASIO, Wave Classic and MS Sound Mapper all without changing the default buffer size (didn't want to mess with anything I didn't understand).

All system sounds are OFF.

Sample rate is 44.1, 16 bit depth, stereo - the default settings I believe.

I saw your post in the other thread about changing the buffer size to 500 or even 1,000 and will try that later today.

Thanks again. John.

sirshambling:

Please, answer the questions:

What is your buffer playback size set to?
If using ASIO, what is your sample buffer size (in ms or samples)?

This is important. If you don't know how to determine these settings, then ask or refer to the help or manual.

Peter,

Using the help search I've looked at the "advanced" settings under audio and for "output" (which I guess is what you refer to as "playback") the settings on Ms Sound Mapper are:-

Audio buffers 4
Buffer size (samples) MME
Priority time critical

For ASIO they are

Buffering settings 50ms (4800 samples)

Does this help?

I am having the exact same problem with the SF 8.0 Demo.
Audio Device Type list shows only Microsoft Wave Mapper, and recording with sound card stereo mix has severe echos and noise.
I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. I have no problem what so ever with SF 7.0 .
This mus be another bug in version 8.0 .

You can only change the device type from the Audio Preference tab.

You cannot change the device type from the Play Device toolbar list.

In ver 8.0, The only choices that appear under my Audio Device Type menue is Microsoft Sound Mapper and Windows Classsic Wave Driver.

In Ver. 7.0, I have the choice of Santa Cruz and Microsoft Sound Mapper .

How can I choose my Santa Cruz card as my preferred Audio device in ver 8 ?

Thanks

Select Windows Classic Wave Driver.

If you have only the Santa Cruz hardware, then it will show up as the "Default Playback Device".

If you have additional audio hardware installed, then select the Santa Cruz as your "Default Playback Device".

Also select the Santa Cruz are your default input device as desired.

For a complete discussion of all of this, please review the on-line help section

"Audio Preferences"

or look at page 280 in the Sound Forge 8.0 manual.

Thanks Peter,

I was able to select my Santa Cruz as you suggested.
However, I am still getting SEVERE echos, delays, steady clicking and loud static noise when monitoring or recording a stereo mix with SF ver 8.

When I switch back to version 7 everything works great.

Echos/loud static:
Turn of input monitoring in Forge or from your TB mixer utility.

In forge this is done from the Audio prefs page. Uncheck

"Monitor audio input while recording"

You should also be able to control input monitoring at the hardware. I don't know how the TB does this, so you will have to read the manual for the TB card.

Steady clicking and delays:
You have to be more specific.

Thanks Peter,

That solved all my noise and echo problems.
For the record and to help others, here's what I did:

Under Options/Preferences/Audio Tab
1. For Audio Device Type Select Windows Classic Wave Driver.
2. For Default Playback Device Select Santa Cruz
3 For Default Recoeding Device Select Santa Cruz.
4. Uncheck "Monitor Audio input while Recording" button.

Thanks again for your help.
