I have closed all apps but ACID 5a, have 512 MB ram and a PIV.18Ghz laptop.... In the Task Manager this app was using 156MB of RAM. That is astounding. So far beyond what any other app uses it's amazing. OK, so I think I have too many effects at a track level, etc. in this project. But here's my question. If I solo buses, does that reduce the load on ACID? Let's say I have a project that's enormous and I want to record a new part. If I solo the drums and say one guitar, does that reduce the strain on the app? Doesn't seem to. I literally could not record a new part without it skipping horribly. And, yes, I am using the ASIO drivers (Echo Indigo sound card). Soooooo annoying. Eric |

In the Task Manager this app was using 156MB of RAM. That is astounding Not so astounding, when you consider that ACID stores much of the project media, especially loop media, in RAM, which really starts to add up when working on large projects. Many plugins will consume generous amounts of CPU, as well. I am fortunate to have a couple of UAD-1's, at my disposal, so I don't need to use a lot of native plugins, only a few choice one's. I have one (30) plus track project with more than 60 loops, one shots and numerous audio tracks. The acid.exe, is over 151MB. I have a PIII 1Ghz/512MB DAW and what I do to reclaim RAM, is to use a great utility app, called FreeMem Pro. A very effective DAW system optimizer and memory manager that releases system RAM, when you need it. It has a handy little realtime CPU & RAM meter that sits on the taskbar that can be indispensible for instantly monitoring your system resources, before you start to have performance problems. Use very little system resources also: http://www.3bsoftware.com/products/freemem.html If you are like me and use the WIndows Docking area, a lot, especially the mixer and have many active buses (6 or more meters going) it can consume a bit of CPU. What I found to be effective in reclaiming CPU, is to streamline the workspace. If you press F11 (toggles the Docking Area view) or pull down the splitter bar, toward the docking area, so only a couple of inches or so are showing, you can easily reclaim needed CPU (sometimes 20% or more, for me). Pressing Ctrl + F11 (toggle the Track Header view) will get you back additional CPU. . With additional resources you should be able to record new tracks. Of course, recording to a 2nd DMA enabled 7200RPM or better, hard drive that is not fragmented, will get you the better performance too. I don't think soloing the buses will release CPU, btw. You could use a great new ACID 5 feature Bypass All Audio FX, in a pinch, to quickly reduce CPU usage. Use the new Key Mapping feature to assign a keyboard key (I used my my F10 key), to toggle the Bypass All Audio FX switch, on and off, on the fly. An easy way to reclaim valuable CPU, in a pinch.
