Maybe what follows are just a few dumb questions, but I'm curious. For a long time I've recommended if you need a AVI and MPEG version of the same project once one is finished, close down, start a new project with the finished file as the source for the second and then watch the render fly along.
I have always thought (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that transcoding is just converting from one file format to another. While I have gotten good speeds before, typically close to 1 to 1 ratio (roughly 3.0 Ghz CPU) when transcoding a AVI to MPEG, lately without me changing anything on my system, some but not all files process much faster then they ever did before. Like the one I just did. Typical AVI DV file with a length of 33 minutes just transcoded in a blazing 17 minutes 21 minutes. The frame counter is going so fast its almost a blur. Not that I'm complaining, just wondering what's going on? Frames in project = 59,437 so if my math is right that's 575.6 frames rendered per minute.
What gives? Others seeing similar speeds? Why do some transcoded files take longer? Like I said, maybe just dumb questions, but it seems odd to me that there should be such a variance since all were talking about is transcoding. All the real work was already done in the first render.
