Timecode in Trimmer / Timeline do not match

Cheesehole wrote on 3/28/2005, 10:17 PM
I'm talking about the time code embedded into the DV AVI files.

A friend of mine is using a list of in/out points to compose a project, but when he drags the selection from the trimmer to the time line, the time code changes. It's not just a few frames off either, it's more like 10 seconds off. The video content is correct in regards to the selection made in the trimmer, but the source time code showing in the event is different.

Looking at the Vegas time line it says a specific frame is such and such a time code. Looking at the trimmer, at the same exact frame, the time code is ~10 seconds different. And yes we are zoomed in all the way in both cases.

Has anyone seen this?

He's using 24p video footage - btw.

Have you applied the timecode effect at the clip level?

try adding timecode while it is in the media pool and then see what happens...

Hope this helps,
Yoyodyne

oops - I see what your doing (thought you were making window dubs)

I think what your seeing on the timeline is the project timecode - not the clip timecode. The only way I know of getting the clip timecode to show up in the timeline is to add the timecode effect at the media pool level to the clip.

Yoyo . ."The only way I know of getting the clip timecode to show up in the timeline is to add the timecode effect at the media pool level to the clip. " . . . and this will not be the timcode of the clip/event but of the overal PROJECT timeline. If your cursor is at 13:02 . . 13:02 will show in the timecode FX. You can also ADD FX - here timecode - to the track header, you will need something IN the track for it to be seen though!

Hey Grazie - thanks for responding (shouldn't you be asleep..or is that me?)

Hmmm, that's not what I'm getting. I added a timecode effect to my clip in the media bin so that timecode shows up on the right side & then I added the effect on the track on the timeline so timecode shows on the left side. I can now see both timecode readouts. Both are correct - looks just like a movie edit - one has the clip timecode and one has the project timecode - the clip one stays with the clip but the timeline one changes as the clip placement changes....

YoYO! thanks! I've now got:

1/- A Project T/C running Top Centre

2/- My first Clip/Event T/C running at the same time on the left

3/- THEN the NEXT Clip/Event T/C running - at the same time as the OVERALL project T/C - on the right!

Now THAT I didn't know!

Thank you .. . thank you!

Oh, it's now 11:00am in London UK .. wide awake and making mistakes!

Grazie

FYI Vegas will also display T/C in the thumbnails but it's TC into the file not source tape TC. You can turn this on / off somwhere in the options.

Sorry I wasn't clear - I'm not talking about the Timecode video effect. This is what I'm referring to:

Options | Preferences | Video | Show source frame numbers on event thumbnails as [None / Frame numbers / Time / Timecode]

This option displays the time code from the SOURCE TAPE - what the camera layed down during the recording.

My friend is getting a mismatch between the Timecode displayed on the trimmer thumbnails vs the main timeline thumbnails, which of course should be impossible.

ahhh - got ya. Man, that's a stumper - I am not able to reproduce but I don't have any 24p media handy - I'm assuming the project is set to ntsc 24p?
Cheesehole wrote on 3/29/2005, 11:50 PM
Yup the project is set to NTSC 24P.

I'm assuming the footage is from a DVX100 or other 24p DV camera and was shot in 24p or 24p A mode- is that correct?

And the footage captured with our capture app, correct?

If yes to both of the above, load on of the clips in the trimmer and check the time format used in the trimmer- is it set to IVTC 23.976? If yes, the trimmer TC and the timeline TC should line up.
