Subject:My SF8 experience, so far

Installed SF8 over the weekend with no real problems. The default install directory is a different one from the directory for SF7 so you won't run into the same problem that was had when going from SF6 to SF7 where Wave Hammer went into demo mode. Registration went flawlessly. The only problem I had was when I first went to start up the program. I have all my sound sample files on an external hard drive that are referenced by progs on my main drive. I had not turned on the external drive after doing the install. I also had not turned on my TC Powercore FW. So when SF8 went scanning for VST and DXi progs and the files they reference, a fault was generated. A box came up wanting to know if I wanted to generate and send an error report to MS. Figured what the heck, and sent it off. SF8 continued to scan and after a couple of minutes all was well.

The .net software was already installed on my machine due to having Acid 5.0a on disk already. Thankfully the second user (.net) was not re-generated.

Most basic functions of the program work okay. There is the bug with the file associations not showing in the check boxes but when you check the lower part of the preferences window where you do such things you'll see that as you highlight each file type, it shows being associated with SF8 (if you want it to be). It's an acknowledged fault supposed to be fixed in the first update.

My main reasons for going to SF8: ASIO support and being able to use VST's without a wrapper program. Directixer is great, but I'd rather go native if I can.

I am seriously doubting that you are not using a "wrapper" in SF8. I believe you simply cannot "see" the wrapper. If any dev folks can chime in on this - I would appreciate it.

In my testing (especially with the Batch Converter), SF8 usage of true VST plugs (like the UAD-1 toolkit) is kinda weird and a bit flaky...like presets not being set/used etc etc.

I don't know exactly what it is - but VST plugin usage in SF8 is no where near as solid as VST plugin usage within Wavelab 4.0...just my two cents at this early juncture...

Exactly how the VST stuff works is irrelevant. Either it works like it should or it doesn't. The point is that the third party translator has been eliminated.

I've recently received a UAD-1 and will be looking into those issues with BC shortly.

I"ll keep my opinions of WaveLab to myself, but other than preset issues, what do you mean by "solid"?

Sonic,

Thanks for the update. Good to hear the third party translator has been purged.

As far as "solid" goes - what I want to express is something like "It just works - all the time" but let's be a little more formal - for me personally - I define "solid" as nothing less than professional level quality and stability when used on paid projects within my studio environment.

Within this definition - I haven't experienced a single issue with Wavelab 4.0 or Nuendo 3.01 using the UAD-1...no CPU munching...no preset issues...nothing...that's "solid".

Can we say the same about SF 8.0?

Must be lucky because like RedNRoll I had no lockups or freezes while editing the longish VO tracks I just finished. Cut, pasted, Wave Hammered, EQ'd etc with nary a glitch and this on an ancient Toshiba 1.8 Ghz Celeron chip laptop with XP Home and just 256 Meg RAM.

Peter,

Are you responding to my post? If so - I am not saying I have had lockups and freezes with SF8.0 - it hasn't even got the nod for a real session yet - too many weird flakey things happening... - I am still back at the starting blocks here trying to get the Batch Converter, Find and Save All working properly....:)

I think I will just chill and keep using WL until 8.0a surfaces. I really do wanna rejoin the SF ranks...I am trying!

Cheers!
