Here's something really weird that I think is a bug. 1. In Windows Explorer, double click on an mp3 file so that it opens in Windows Media Player and is playing through your speakers. 2. While that file is being played in Media Player, open SF 8. Do you hear what happens? The file that is being played in Media Player immediately speeds up to probably 20x it's normal speed! Why does that happen when you open SF 8 while Media Player is running? |

Hi John- I'm not reproducing this one. Any other details you can tell about your repro or your system? Joel |

Ok, I did a little experimenting and my theory is that your mp3 file that you begin to play in Media Player must have a sampling rate of 22 KHz or lower (not 44). Also, it can consist of either music or speaking. And it just so happened that during my experimenting, right after I began playing a 22 KHz audio file and as I was opening up SF 8, the phone rang, (understand I have the phone plugged into the computer which makes the speakers plugged into my computer ring too) and even the RING was like 20x it's normal speed--the frequency sounded like a bird chirping, unlike any other time I've heard the phone ring through the computer! So apparantly SF 8 affects the entire soundcard somehow when an mp3 file less than 44 KHz is being played. hmmmm Does this help you? Message last edited on3/17/2005 12:52:34 PM byJohn 17:17. |

Are you using an Echo card? ASIO in Forge? If so, this is likely just a known Echo issue. When the ASIO device is instantiated by Sound Forge, it remembers it's last sample rate and resets the hardware to match, regardless of whether the WDM driver is in use elsewhere. J. |

I'm using the Audiophile 2496. Is this my problem? |

Most of these cards can only handle one sample rate at a time (unlike, say, the Audigy, which internally resamples everything to 48kHz before playback), so you'll run into this problem when running two or more audio programs with different settings. My Echo cards have an option in the console to lock the sample rate at the desired value; look for something similar. |

What's the best sound card out there now? I didn't think anything good came from Soundblaster; is that not the case anymore? |

Check out cards from Echo (echoaudio.com) and M-Audio (m-audio.com). I use Echo stuff and love it--I have a Layla 3G and a MiaMIDI, as well as an Indigo IO for my laptop. From past posts, it would appear that people have generally had better SF/Vegas/ACID experiences with Echo than with M-Audio, mainly due to driver and support issues. |

I've never had any problems with the M-audio soundcard with any other programs, not even former SF programs. As I see it, SF 8 should change, not the sound card. |
