Subject:How many K-bits are considered CD quality with mp3's?

I've heard the expression CD quality regarding mp3's. Is that so?

What are the more popular K-bit settings used by people?

Thanx
Scott

What does this have to do with Soundforge?

I did a comparrison study as far as spectrum analysis awhile back.

See this post for more information:http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=19&MessageID=215681

"CD quality" covers the entire human hearing spectrum of frequencies (20Hz to 20Khz) Most programs I've seen refer to 128Kbs as "CD quality". As you will see in my study 128Kbs doesn't reproduce anything above 15.8 Khz. 192 Kbs gives more of a CD qualtiy of reproducing frequencies up to 20Khz with a slight attenuation at 15Khz. 192Kbs is what I usually use when extracting from CD and saving to .MP3. A CD is actually able to reproduce frequencies op to 22,050 Hz (ie 1/2 the 44.1Khz sampling frequncies) So again 192Kbs is not ACTUALLY "CD Quality". 320Kbs is "CD quality" as far as frequency reproduction. When you hear the term "CD quality", it really means nothing, it could ujust mean it has SOME of the same qualities as CD. So a cassette tape could be said to have "CD quality", but they would have a harder time selling this to the consumer that their cassette is the same quality as a CD. Well it does have A same quality, they both reproduce audio. Sattelite radio is another one promoting "Digital radio with CD quality at the touch of your finger tips." I've recorded sattelite radio broadcasts and did spectrum analysis on them too. They go up to 15Khz in frequency reproduction, where there's a brickwall filter for everything above this.

What does this have to do with SF? I possibly want to use SF going in the direction of my questions. Why do you suppose I would be asking these questions here? I am figuring that there is someone out there that is either using SF for the questions I am posting, or at least if they know the answer they are is kind enough to give me a courteous answer if they just happen to know the answer.

OK?

Isn't that why this forum is here?

"What does this have to do with SF? I possibly want to use SF going in the direction of my questions. "

Not a mention of that anywhere.

"Why do you suppose I would be asking these questions here? "

I have no clue - why are you? I come here to discuss Soundforge and it's usage?

"I am figuring that there is someone out there that is either using SF for the questions I am posting, or at least if they know the answer they are is kind enough to give me a courteous answer if they just happen to know the answer. Isn't that why this forum is here?"

Well - you figured wrong. Not only did you post this question - you thought it might be cool to throw in two or three more that have nothing to do with Forge. I saw all your rabble - sounds like you are getting ready to buy an IPod or an MP 3 player....just how does that tie into Forge at all?

Not sure if you heard but yesterday - Sony just rolled out a brand new version of Forge and most Forge users probably want to know what's the latest on that topic NOT crap like:
"Hey - I should get up to speed on the latest media players"
or
"Should I buy an IPod
or my favorite
"What's the latest on Behinger Mixers?"

How does any of this relate in any way to Soundforge? I would love to hear your explanation....

Your useless questions only serve to push relevant SoundForge posts down to the bottom or the forum view or out of view completely and I really don't want to spend all day weeding through your crap to get what I need.

Seriously - Your questions should be addressed to a portable audio player forum or a media lounge forum or something like that...not a forum where it is abundantly clear what the main thrust of conversion is.

At least have the courtesy to pre-pend your thread titles with "OT" so everyone knows it is "off-topic" to begin with and will ignore it quick.

I am a patient guy for maybe one off topic question but 3 or 4 in a row? What's the deal man?

Lanco,
I think your posts are on topic. You're using Forge as your tool for converting MP3 files as I do, and saving as an MP3 file as well as questions regarding playback of those MP3's are on topic. You should be concerned with the quality at which you are saving your files at, no matter what format you're saving too, to ensure this is the results you want. I'm not sure where Vocalpoint's reasoning about this falls in. Although, SF8 was just released, topics outside of SF8 specifics are just as welcome as the rest.

Vocalpoint contributes in discussions regarding video cards and audio cards, so why is this any different from asking MP3 player advice? So his comments are pretty hypocritical if you ask me.

Red,

Am I missing something here? Is there even a mention of Soundforge in this post and I quote:

"I need to get caught up to speed on the new memory card players.
I guess the biggies are by iPod and Sony? Any others worth mentioning?Any that are not recommended?"

Or this one?

"I've heard the expression CD quality regarding mp3's. Is that so? What are the more popular K-bit settings used by people?"

Then as if to shield this guy from any more abuse - you boldly assume:

"You're using Forge as your tool for converting MP3 files as I do, and saving as an MP3 file as well as questions regarding playback of those MP3's are on topic"

Huh? Really? You came to that conclusion all by yourself?

Finally - regarding these being hypocritical (and presumably "off-topic"):

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=349588

Wow - a guy wanting to know which video card to use with his Vegas 5.0 NLE oddly enough posted in the Vegas Video forum. What a concept - And then low and behold - there's me chiming in on what card I use with my Vegas Video NLE posted where - in the Vegas Video Forum. Hey - we touched on video, video cards, Vegas and what some of us have found with various cards with a Vegas environment.

And here's another true off topic gem:

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=1&MessageID=338232

A guy from the Acid Pro forum that uses an M-Audio Delta card wanting to investigate some issues he is having with certain drivers when used with his Acid Pro 5.0 software...and he wants other Delta users (and hopefully Acid users) to supply some feedback...and oh look - there's me...a Delta user and an Acid Pro 5.0 user supplying some feedback on various driver combinations I found success with using Acid Pro 5.0...posted where? You guessed it - in the Acid 5.0 Users forum.

Are you on glue? These responses are totally within the framework and spirit of each original thread.

Peace. Out.

VP

Vocalpoint

I think the best way to solve this situation with you or anyone with similar ideas is to just plain ignore my posts, because Vocalpoint, I promise you, I will NEVER read another one of your waste of space posts again, putting it kindly.

So, I won't know it even if you should happen to grow up and show some courtesty and actually apologize for taking up not only my time, but all the other fine people on this forum.

The only way I'd know if you apologized was if somebody else mentioned it in one of their posts. And frankly, I don't care. So, there goes all your satisfaction of obviously trying to stir things up and get some attention the wrong way.

That's pretty much how a mature person would do it. I thought I'd spell it out for you, because you're obviously not.

Good-bye forever Vocalpoint.

I'd like to say it was a pleasure......I really would.

P.S. Believe me, NOBODY has time for your kind of crap.

"Huh? Really? You came to that conclusion all by yourself?"

Yes, have you ever saved as an MP3 file in Sound Forge? There are "templates" in SOUND FORGE which say, "128Kbs, CD quality Audio". Now please explain to me if someone is asking about the K-bit rates as being really "CD quality", how is this not Sound Forge related when the same term he's questioning about is used in Sound Forge as a Save Template? He was also looking for recommendations regarding players to play these files. Just like a Video card has nothing to do with Vegas, other than Vegas sends all it's graphics information to it so that the video card can DISPLAY the Vegas user interface, Sound Forge can SAVE to these MP3 devices when they're plugged into your PC. So it's the same analogy, one is a seperate device outside of the Vegas software, which interfaces with Vegas. So an MP3 player, is a Device that can interface with Sound Forge through being connected to your PC, just like a video card is a device that plugs into your PC that gets interfaced with your PC. I'm not saying a video card is not Vegas related, but you're the one screaming saying an MP3 player is not Sound Forge related. It's just as related as a video card discussion, I'm sorry your ignorance in this matter is blinding you. If he was in here asking about a microwave he's looking at purchasing then I would have to agree with you, that there is no common tie between a microwave and Sound Forge. If you really want to play forum police and decide what is ON topic and what is OFF topic, then go over to the Vegas Video forum and breath down their back over there, when they're asking about different video cameras to use and have arguments about which is better. Sound Forge is a tool that works with AUDIO, anything audio related should be fair game for discussion in these forums, and this includes MP3 players.

I think for you putting Lanco on ignore this user list is a good idea for you. You also might want to consider an apology for your rude behavior too.

Red,

Your long winded BS never changes. You will do anything to try and convince everyone you are right. Even if it is the thinnest tie-in - so be it. If you think these topics are on topic - then knock yourself out.

Lanco - I was a bit harsh and I do apologize.

Peace.

OK, VP Let's move forward. We all could always do better, huh?

In a sense, I can understand your point of view. I think it's not really that important and that if anything it's kind of a gray area. To me those questions are related exactly to what I am going to be doing recording and processing on my computer.

Lanco,

So - just so I understand where you are at - what version of Forge are ya running? What audio interface etc etc...I also see that you are very much into converting vinyl to digital?

Update when you can.

Hey VP

These are the specs:

Chipset: Asus KT600
Front Side Bus: 333
RAM: 256
Processor: AMD Atholon XP26004
Motherboard: Asus A7V600
Mia is on its own IRQ
Mia Driver Version 5.58. The other version crashes the computer.
SF 5.0, Noise Reduction 2.0
unbalanced plugs
Behringer UB802 mixer

My wife built this and gave me this info to talk to the Echo tech. I'm trying to read her writing. haha

I play arranger keyboard, so I have been recording with that.

Also interested in recording reel-to-reel, 8-track tapes, cassettes, vinyl 33's and 45's and the old shelac 78's.

I am interested mostly in de-clicking only with the tapes and records as, I think so far anyway, that less processing is better, even if I eventually am able to do it at 2496. Unless, of course it really, really needs it.

From there either to wav, mp3 on CD and this other new stuff that I don't know a thing about or if I'm asking the question in an intelligible manner.
