Subject:Anyone have problems with SF5 and Mia?

Talked to Echo Audio again today. I have all the right gear, drivers, settings etc, but 2496 still clips to the max after only a few seconds of recording no matter where the settings are. The level meters flicker as they jump up and down before I even start recording. It mostly clears up at 2448. They issued an RA so they can take a look at it again.

We tried this a few years ago and they sent me a new card with the same results.

Since I really don't want a repeat of this situation I did a little thinking and deducing and this is what struck me:

The tech asked if I had tried it with any other programs like Sonar etc. I don't have any other real pro program.

This got me to thinking that possibly there is something in SF5 is not up to Mia standards.

So, I just tried recording with a free program I recently downloaded called Audacity. This free program allows you to record at 2496,and what do you suppose?.......it never clipped once in the time I was testing it.

A free program yet! Go figure.

Anyone have some ideas on this? Sony/Sound Forge help please.

Thanx
Scott

Hey!!! This isn't Sound Forge 8.0 related!!! What the F*** are you doing posting this message in here?!

Just kidding. You'll have to probably excuse some of the behavior in here for awhile. Everytime immediately after a new Sony release, all the wackos come here to play in that particular forum. After that things settle down and then there's usually only one wacko left, and that's me. :-)

Regarding your question, I remember awhile back where quite a few users where having problems recording 24 bit in SF5.0 and had some problems similar to what you described. You might want to do a search on this forum and see what you can find. Goto the search button on the top right of this page and search on "24bit Recording Problem" or "5.0 24bit recording" I believe it was related to a possible Windows issue. What Windows OS are you running SF 5.0 on? You may also want to search through the "Knowledge Base" located under the "Support" button at the top of this screen. Another thing is to make sure you are running the latest 5.0 update, which you can get from the Download>Updates page, because this might have been fixed in an update.

Red

Thanx. I saw the kids playing a few years ago too when I first tried this equipment. Hmmmmmmmmmm....it almost seems like you were one of them then. haha

Thank goodness for all the knowledgable and courteous users that are here.

Anyway, thank you for your response. I am going to check this all out before I send the Mia back again. So many people liked that card. That and the Audiophile 2496 was the rage when I was checking into it. They were neck to neck at the time.

So either your ideas will lead me to a fix here, or I have to send that sucker back again.

Man, am I going to be glad when I can do all the stuff I want to the way it's supposed to work.

I'm going to check for a 5.0 update. I didn't know they did that. I have a hunch this might be the answer.

I didn't find a 5.0 upgrade.

I scanned the searches you mentioned and didn't find anything yet.

Then I tried the Knowledge database. I really thought I had found the answer.

It said that echo was aware of a problem recording at 24 with the Mia using Windows 98SE and 5.0,and were working on a fix.

SF answer was to record at 32 and everything should work fine.

I was veeeeeery happy and SF said that the MIa didn't support one of my settings, which was of course 32.

Do you suppose I could be picking up radio waves and it's screwing this up?

I often wondered about that, and just now as I sit here my stereo is set to phono with no record playing and I am picking up a radio station and a radio station.

Maybe I should just use Audacity, the free program that records at any rate you want basically. I guess I'll check search on that topic. Because I surely don't want to ask questions or talk about the wrong thing here. hehe

"I didn't find a 5.0 upgrade"
You're right, there isn't a 5.0 update on the updates page, I just checked it. This is a mistake, there should be one. Sony!?

I believe the latest update for v5.0 is v5.0f. Goto your help menu and select "About Sound Forge" and this should tell you your version number. If you don't have 5.0f then a fix might be closer than you think, if we can get someone from Sony to put the link up for the 5.0 update.

I highly doubt that the radio station has anything to do with your problem because this shouldn't make your meters dratically jump, since I'm hoping the noise that might be bleeding in from the radio station is lower than the actual audio signal, but this is a seperate problem you might need to address.

BTW, I saw you mention your system specs in the other post but you didn't mention which OS you have installed. Are you running Win98, Win2k, or WinXP?

I'm doing some seek and destroy to find the link for you. I didn't find the actual update link yet, but this one I did find should be encouraging for you regarding the v5.0f update.

Third bullet point down:
"A bug that prevented recording using some 24-bit sound cards has been fixed. "

Hey Red

This is looking up! I'm going to try a Google search. Who knows, it works for about everything else.

OS is Windows 98SE

While out there in google land maybe you can find out what is wrong with this thread? Is it just me or is this the only thread that I have to use my horizontal scroll bar to read it?

You know, it seems like I was experiencing that earlier.

As far as google land, hah, what a search that was. I just found all kinds of sites that have a lot of crack programs available. Now,.......if I only smoked the pipe................

Anyway, thanx again Red, I think I'll try emailig Sony and see if they can send it to me with a few valium or something. haha

Well, I just filled out Sony's epistal and sent them an email.

Sure hope this is the quick solution.

Geez, just when I was getting used to running the free 2496 Audacity program too.

Oops!

I think I know the answer to version 5.0f.

I found my old posts from a few years ago. I was using version f then.

So, it sounds to me then that since I have supposedly compatible equipment now that it's an Echo Audio problem.

And unless they've changed their Mia since then, which I kind of doubt because the tech , the same one I talked to then, sounded puzzled by my dilema.

Trying not to jump to conclusions, but if that's the case, I am hoping Echo is one of those companies that will send my SOMETHING that will work at 2496, even if they have to give me a newer and/or better card.

It's interesting to note that a phone conversation with a Sound Forge tech back in about 2001 recommended the Mia sound card for SF5.0.

So, who will do what to take care of undoubtedly about the most frustrating situation this musician has ever been in.

Sony/Sound Forge, will you give me the update that will work with this Mia considerting one of your tech recommended it?

Hoping for a quick resolution from Sony and/or Echo.

Thank you
Scott
