Subject:XPress -- What Can I do with it?

I downloaded acid express, because I want to try it out and see what I can do with it. So far I can't do anything with it. I went thru the tutorials, and I can't create a single track with the package I downloaded. There is nothing in the files that I can use - I am supposed to be able to drag and drop. The soft-synth allows me to tap on a keyboard for a sound, but I can't transfer the sound to the project chart. I basically can not create the first sound of a trial recording. I record guitar with an 8-track Fostex digital recorder, so I have some knowledge of how to do it. Where do I go to find out more on Xpress or is this pretty much it? All I wanted to do was try some drum beats anyway. |

I suggest you go to AcidPlanet.com and download the current "8Pack": http://www.acidplanet.com/tools/8packs/ This is a sample song created in ACID and includes 8 loops, which are what you use to create music in ACID. You'll get to see how someone else created a song and a few sample loops to play with. |

No I haven't had any results either. Sony hasn't shown me anything with this software package. I hear Sony is in financial trouble. I can see why because they are weak on functionality, and this is an awful handicap in today's marketplace. This product only confirms what I've heard from other people concerning the company. Marketing has their head up thier derrier. I hear Fruity Loops is a pretty good product. I just want to try out a few simple things to see if it works, that's all. If it looks like I can work with it then I'll start buying. If it's another block of ice, then forget it. Message last edited on3/7/2005 5:16:51 PM byWoodyWalker. |

Adding to the timeline is as simple as finding a sound sample in the explorer window and dragging it to an empty track on the timeline. You'll now have a new track containing that sample. The track is initially empty. Drag the mouse across the timeline to "paint" the waveform display on the track. You can paint the whole sound file or small bits of it, placing them where you want them to occur in the finished song. The help file goes over this pretty clearly. |

That really helps...I guess what I wasn't getting is that you cannot drag and drop...you have to paint it onto a timeline...thanks makes life easier.... |

OK I see how the paint brush works, now that you explain it. I watched the tutorial twice, and did not get it. The Human Factors department should be listening. I am a test engineer for a major US/Japanese computer related equipment manufacturer. Now I am trying to use the "soft synth" properties that are "available voices." Are they really "available?" I can make sounds but can not place them on the timeline. Message last edited on3/8/2005 3:09:25 AM byWoodyWalker. |

Now I am trying to use the "soft synth" properties that are "available voices." Are they really "available?" I can make sounds but can not place them on the timeline. You have to simply route a MIDI track (with MIDI data) to the soft synth (and subsequently paint events in like you do digital audio). "You have to simply route a MIDI track (with MIDI data) to the soft synth (and subsequently paint events in like you do digital audio)." How do I do that with Acid Express? The MIDI route function appears to be an Acip Pro capability. Message last edited on3/12/2005 4:34:49 AM byWoodyWalker. |

Oh, I totally forgot you were using ACID XPress, Woody. Sorry about that. You are correct in assuming that you cannot route a MIDI track to a preferred soft synth. (I believe ACID XPress only plays back MIDI tracks using the general MIDI sound set.) MD, ok , thanks for trying to help. It looks like I can't create anything with Acid Xpress. It would be nice to see how this program works with some kind of a demo. |

Woody, You might want to try the trial version of ACID Pro. It's free, runs for 30 days, and has all the features of the full version (except for certain 3rd party file format plug-ins). http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=541 Thanks, Steve |
