Subject:Associating LAME encoder w/ SF?

I have read that LAME is the best mp3 encoder, however SF uses the Fraunhofer encoder to save mp3s... Is there anyway to associate SF with LAME? Thanks.

I don't know about replacing the MP3 encoder with LAME, but Fraunhofer pretty much developed all of the MPEG 1 and 2 audio specs. Personally, I think the Fraunhofer encoder is superior to LAME, especially at low bitrates.

Hey Xpred,

Well, it is possible to associate the LAME encoder with Sound Forge. BUT... it does not work! I was trying to do the samething but no success because Sound Forge gives me an error.

Here is how I went about it. First, you need an ACM version of LAME. ACM means Audio Compression Manager. I found it from this website

[url]www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-CD-Rippers-Encoders/LAME-ACM-Codec.shtml

Follow the instructions on that website on how to install it.

Once installed, you open up Sound Forge and open up any audio file you like. To save it using LAME encoder, go to "Save As..." command. Scroll down on the "Save as type" to select "Wave (Microsoft) (*.wav)". Click on the "Custom..." button. On the "Format:" area, scroll down to select "LAME Mp3 Encoder" (not quite sure if it's the right name but you will know when you see it).

From there you can select any format you wish. But the ACM version has LESS features than the regular LAME encoder. For some reason, Sound Forge gives me an error on this LAME encoder when saving. Who knows, it may work for you or I maybe doing something wrong.

Keep this in mind. Using this method, you will create an mp3 file with a .WAV file extension. You're second option will be download the regular LAME encoder and get a front-end program.

Good luck!

I've asked in other forums which was the best mp3 encoder and I've yet to hear that LAME is better, it is free unlike the Fraunhoffer one which might explain it's popularity. Perhaps it's the best of the freebies which kind of skews the reponses as well.

I concur with what mpd said: The Fraunhoffer sounds better a low bit rates, however, that said,
I use the LAMErc3 which has far more parameters and options, not to mention batch convert.
