This error means that ACID cannot acquire exclusive use of your soundcard because some other application is using it already. It could also mean that the soundcard drivers are having a problem. Are you using any other application with ACID like SONAR, Cubase, etc.?

MaHeNa is 100% correct. I have an Audigy 2 and an ESI Waveterminal 192-X. I only use the Audigy 2 to connect my keyboard(s) to my computers. I use this computer with Acid for recording only. I use my other computer as an instrument where my soft synths are used. I kept getting this error. I went to MIDI preferences and unchecked the ports where Audigy 2 was automatically selected by the program and that solved the problem. The Audigy 2 (SB Audigy 2 Synth A) is my default MIDI playback device. Hell, it's my only MIDI playback device. If the Audigy 2 ports are selected anywhere in MIDI preferences, I get this error. Go to MIDI prefences and see if a problem like that exists.

Fortunately for me, I don't play soft synths on this computer, so I don't have to select anything in MIDI preferences. I feel for you, because it's a real pain. Just to check, I used soft synths in Ableton Live 4 and Sonar 4 PE, and I don't get any errors like this. So the problem is Acid's alone. I hope you can figure it out soon.

Sorry Johnny Roy, I don't know why I put the original poster's name instead of yours as the person who identified the problem. I'll blame it on pain medication I have to take. It does really screw me up. Maybe I only have one computer, and I think I have two. Maybe I don't even have Acid Pro 5. ;-)

Don't use any apps that can "lock" in your sound card unless there's an option to release audio and MIDI ports when it's not active. SPD's apps have this feature but I don't know about the others.

Also try disabling system sounds via the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet in Control Panel. (Click the "Sounds" tab, then choose, "No Sounds," for the sound scheme.)
