Subject:Acid 5 and Intel P4M

Is anyone out there running AP5 on a laptop using an Intel P4M (Centrino Technology)? I'm looking into a new laptop, but I'm a bit confused with processor speeds of the P4M. What P4M processor speed would be comparable to a P4 3.0 processor for a desktop? What P4M processor would be a minimum for AP5? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think you'll find anything comparable to a desktop P4 3.0 GHz as far as laptops go. Believe the P4-Ms top out at around 2.6 GHz but only with a bus speed of 400 MHz and a cache size of 512 K (vs. the bus speed of a P4 3.0 GHz HT with 800 MHz bus and 1 MB cache).

Still, even the lowest P4-M should handle ACID Pro 5 just fine (the slowest is around 1.4 GHz). The CPU requirement for ACID Pro 5 is at least a PIII 800 MHz. My former (desktop) system ran at that speed and didn't have problems with ACID 5.

Forgot to add: Get as much RAM as you can possibly afford, at least 512 MB.

Hello,

I run Acid 5.0 on a dell 9200 laptop with a PM proc. 1.8 gig, 1 gig of ram, and I don't have any problems with it, I works as good as my desktop.

if you're still pondering which to go with, I would highly recommend staying away from the p4 and going with the centrino p4-m based laptop. HEAT is a killer!!! The p4 chip is simply too hot and in my humble opinion, will eventually lead to operation problems down the road. Also, all the weight, fans, and sensors needed to make this config operate reliably over time, is just not worth the added headaches.

If you go the p4 route, you had better have a really good extended warrantee.

I'm now running a dell 8600, 2GHz, w/1MB ram. works like a dream for now.
I would like to try AP5 again. But for now, it seems to crash with NI guitar rig pro, BG techs plugins, ImpOscar, Pro 53, and VB audio plugs. So I uninstalled it. Hopefully the next update will fix some of these. So i'm waiting for update to try it out again. However, runs AP4 wonderfully.

Can even run on "power saving mode" with 16 tracks and bunches of plugins with no problems. So I think you would be fine with less power, say a 1.5, 1.6GHz cpu centrino with 512mb should be fine.

I'll never make the p4 "hot chip" $2K mistake again!!!
