Subject:Sudden Serious Problem

I just tried opening a file I've been working on and the meter levels are through the roof.. This is after the file has loaded and while it is not playing. Pressing play gets no sound. I don't understand this. I tried opening a new project and everything seemed to be normal. Has my project got corrupted - if so, how. Some feedback loop that occurred through opening and closing the file? I'll be really unhappy if it's not recoverable as I've been working on it for almost a week. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Just for the hell of it, did you try switching your audio drivers to see if that made a difference?
You know, classic wave, sound mapper, asio.

Thanks for the idea - I hadn't though to try. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference. There seems to be something wrong with the ACD file. I can open up other ACD files and they will play. As soon as I open this one the lvels shoot up. I tried muting the buses but as soon as I unmute them back the levels go. I do have an earlier backup that I saved to another file name so I can use that as it is OK but this is seriously worrying.

E-mail Support has the ability to accept uploaded files now.
I'd try sending them the problematic ACD file with a description. Maybe they can find the problem.

I might well do that. I think the problem is something to do with an effects chain. I had three buses. I made a copy of the file and deleted the buses. The file will play normally. Perhaps I can find out which effects chain is causing the trouble. I was planning to remix the file in any case. At least it's not completely dead.

Thanks for showing an interest.

are you using a Waves plugin on a Bus? i've had similar problems when applying a Waves plugin (any Waves plugin) on a Bus or VSTi. the meters would go through the roof (the sound would also hang and change to a loud speaker-wrecking tone), and the only thing that helped for me is restarting ACID. now i simply no longer use Waves plugins on Buses (they work fine on regular tracks).

I found the culprit. It was Express Ampilitude modulation. Nothing was set for the preset. I set the preset and it seems OK now. I guess I must have been experimenting and forgotten. I don't remember using this preset but it was the only one on the busand it was that bus that was causing trouble. I don't have any Waves Plugins but thanks for the tip. Should it not be possible for them to be used on a bus?
