Subject:No MP3's recognized after 7.0b update

I just updated Audio Studio to 7.0b, and noticed that it no longer recognizes MP3 files. When attempting to open one, the program gives an unsupported file error message. I verified that the MP3 box is checked in the file association screen. Anyone else having the same problem? Have a solution? |

Hello- We're not able to reproduce this in-house. Perhaps you've used up your 20 free encodes before registering? If you try to Save to mp3, what happens? Do you have any other Sonic Foundry or Sony applications installed? Have you tried running the Copy [Sony/SoFo] Plug-in Licenses from Installed [Sofo/Sony] Utility at Start-->Programs-->Sony-->Utilities-->Migration Tools? HTH, Joel |

I recently purchased this software and have used it only once for a project with wave files only. I didn't know anything about 20 free encodes and I registered right away. I cannot save a file as an MP3, because MP3 does not show up in the [Save As] list of possible file types. It also does not show up in the [Open] file type list. I also have Vegas and DVD Architect and have tried running the copy plug-in license utility you suggest, and still cannot open or save as MP3. Thanks for the suggestion. |

I believe there's a separate MP3 registration process, much like the MPEG registration process for Vegas. |

Have you tried to repair the Sound Forge Audio Studio installation? Start Menu-->Programs-->Sony-->Sound Forge Audio Studio-->Uninstall Sound Forge Audio Studio 7.0. This opens a Maintenance Wizard that has a repair option. -Suzan |

Yes, I tried to repair the installation. I also checked my Vegas + DVD installations and noticed that MP3 is not listed on those file type menus either. On closer examination, neither are MPEG nor MPEG2. |

Perhaps this knowledge-base article might apply: http://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=894&p_created=1066313220&p_sid=lbm2opyh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD03MzEmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li Otherwise, try sending an email to Customer Service from this address: http://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?p_sid=7*C-Wpyh&p_lva=894&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD03MzEmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_srch= http://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?p_sid=7*C-Wpyh&p_lva=894&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD03MzEmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_srch= Hope one of these helps. Thanks again, but the knowledge base article doesn't apply because the MP3, MPEG, and AC3 don't show up in the list of possible rendering file options. What I did notice though, is that in reviewing the list of [FileIO Plugins] folders under each of the Sony programs, MP3, MPEG, and AC3 are not there, but they are in the [Shared Plugins] folder list under Sony. Can I just copy and paste them into the other [FileIO Plugins] folders for Sound Forge and Vegas+DVD? |

I'm not sure what caused your problem, but a complete uninstall>restart>install should fix things although this is something the maintenance wizard should have done also. Give that a try if you haven't done so already. Is it possible that you somehow have read only acess set to the File I/O folder, therefore the folder exists but SF can't install to it? Copying and pasting probably won't work. It's very likely those other Sony folder plugs are from Vegas and are different versions that are incompatible. It probably won't hurt to try and see what happens. I think the uninstall/reinstall is your best bet, because then your registry information is correct, and SF is using the correct files. |

The plug-ins are in the correct location for Sony products: C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats moving them will completely fail. -Suzan |

I also had this problem and buying a new computer and reinstaling the Sound Forge into that new computer removed the problem. So..apparenly it's not Sound Forge's fault..but some computers. I also have to say that with an older Sound Forge install in the old computer, mp3's were ok. |
