Are VBR mp3s the best now for saving music files? -Sound Forge - PC

Subject:Are VBR mp3s the best now for saving music files? Posted by: Xpred Date:2/16/2005 1:57:24 AM I do a lot of audio editing and work ... the VBR option is there, and I always seem to choose the "Highest Quality VBR" mp3s... Are these the best format nowadays? My other question is are they really also at 48,000 Hz? It says that in the options, but it seems to be 44,100 Hz even at HIGHEST QUALITY (Which is fine to me, just wondering what would be diff of medium quality vs highest quality vbr).. Thanks!

VBR is designed for memory-based applications, and can sometimes results in better quality. The low/med/high quality settings just tell the encoder how much time to spend encoding, and are remnants from the Fraunhofer IIS encoder running on slow machines. Personally, I only use the high setting for everything. I don't get the rest of your question abut 48 kHz.

What I meant was ... when you save something in VBR mp3, there are presets ... ie Lowest Quality, Medium Quality, Highest Quality. Under Medium Quality, it dictates saving at 44,100 Hz, and Highest Quality dictates saving at 48,000 Hz. I'm not sure if this is really the case because whenever I save ANY VBR mp3 at "Highest Quality," and open it with either WMP, Winamp, RealPlayer, etc or just even open it on Sound Forge again, it just says the mp3 file is running at 44,100 Hz and not 48,000 Hz (Which is fine for me) .. I just wondering why is this the case.
