Hello,
please forgive this question if it has been asked many times

I have copied individual instruments from an 8 track recorder to my computer. I am trying to recontruct the songs so that I can inprove the mix, sound and levels. When I place the drums and bass in and line them up, they start in sync and quickly go out of time. i thought that it might have something to do with how the tape heads were turning while i transfered to the computer.

I was wondering if there was a solution to fixing this.

i do not believe that it is a cpu problem as if i stop playback and start at another point it is still out of time.

i am running a pIV 2.4 with 512 rdram with 340 gig of HD space.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Was the original recording on 8-track made to a click track? (i.e., are you sure it has a constant tempo?) If yes, then add the drum track to ACID and Beatmap it to the BPM of the original click track. Continue to add tracks and beatmap each of them the same way (although once you establish the correct BPM they should stay in sync as one-shots)

If the original record was not recorded to a click-track then you have three options:
1. You can beatmap the same track multiple times at the point that it drifts but this is very tedious and ACID doesn’t have good tools to handle this.
2. You can use a tool like Sound Forge to force/time-stretch each measure to a common BPM
3. You can Tempo-map the project to match the changing tempo of the song using Tempo Markers and Time Markers to sync the project beat to the songs timing using Adjust Tempo to Match Marker to Cursor on the Time Markers.

Adding to what JohnnyRoy said, if you're not going to change the tempo of your ACID project, you can switch the track type to "One-shot," which will keep the track as it was originally intended, i.e., ACID will not time stretch the track.

Double-click the track's icon in the track list and under the General tab, switch the "track type" to "One-shot."

Thanks!

Ill try those suggestios.

the one thing i forgot to mention is that the drum track is a drum machine that was recorded to 8 track, then dumped to my computer....
not sure if that opens anymore options for me.

the tracks were already set to "one shot"

It is possible then that the drift is caused by the transport of the tape machine during playback. Follow one of my three options above (beatmapping, sound forge, or tempo mapping).
