I'm REAL new to PC music and MIDI. I've used ACID to assemble tunes but now I'd like to get involved with MIDI, sampling & sequencers. Done live recordings and am very familiar with using a PC. I'd like to hire someone to configure the hardware/software system. Live in Long Beach, CA. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Look, you really don't have to hire anyone for the kind of setup you are talking about. There are a couple of manufacturers who make this kind of thing REAL easy & you should go with them. If your computer has a USB port (which, at this point, it is hard NOT to have one) you are better than halfway there. The beauty part (IF you have Windows XP or OS X (Mac) you can buy just about ANY midi controller/keyboard from M-Audio, Roland (Edirol), or even Behringer that is USB compatible & be up and running with it in a half hour or less. It's worked for me and I am a 40 year old Foghat listenin' (well, only occasionally) frustrated guitar player who really hates computers. Generally, it is just a matter of loading the drivers for the controller/keyboard & setting the preferences in your host program & you are off. Really, it's that simple. Acid makes it even easier to handle, in many respects. The only hard part is writing a song that doesn't sound like generic crap- the real learning curve. I'm not sure I can help you there. That is something I am still working out myself but, if you just make the leap, this forum is the most helpful I have ever encountered for the nuts n' bolts stuff. |

I you want to build your own system you can start by looking at what I built last year. I’ve got the pc specs on my web site. I use it for Vegas and ACID and it’s a solid performing system. ~jr Message last edited on5/7/2005 8:23:52 PM byJohnnyRoy. |

OK, mortalengines, you got me out of my funk and into fixing this rig. FINALLY figured out how to configure MIDI/ACID/Softsynth! This MIDI stuff is alot like learning a new language...painful. I'm a former pro musician and do video for a living now. Been so involved with video that I didn't make time to keep up with electronic music over the last 10 years! It's amazing what can be done on a PC now days. Johnny Roy, thanks for the help, too. My system is very smilar to yours with a P4 3.2 and 2 GB ram, Layla 3G sound card for ACID/MIDI and a Presonus Firewire card for Vegas multitrack recording of real, tangible instruments that a human has to play! Just got this stuff about a month ago. |
