Subject:Anyone been able to find out about 8.0 from customer service?

I was just wondering if anyone has been able to contact customer service about the release date/cost of 8.0. I tried earlier today but was unable to get through. I figured rather than have a bunch of folks call to find out the same thing, if anyone has been able to get through, it might make more sense to just post it once here for everyone else. If not, I'll just keep trying tomorrow.

I am actually really curious that if I buy 7 now, will I get a free upgrade to 8?

I mean, there has always been "cutoff dates" for those things, i.e. those who bought acid for example after october 2004 got a free update to 5:)

i wonder what the cutoff dates for sound forge are...

Sony???

I would guess that the cutoff date is probably around 30 days before the release of the next version. Since no release timing has leaked out yet, i would also guess that we're more than 30 days away now.

Generally, buying something now and counting on a free upgrade later is a bad bet, and not just in this particular case.

This is from the announcement:

"Sound Forge 8 will be shipping in early March with a suggested retail price of $399.95. It will be available at software retailers worldwide or at the www.sony.com/mediasoftware Web site."

I read a post on one these forums recently stating that SoFo/Sony upgraded someone for free in a 2 month time frame. If you REALLY need Sound Forge now, keep calling support and make sure to get some written confirmation (email would do) that details whatever upgrade arrangement is offered. Sonic Foundry had a rep of being quite generous and flexible about this kind of thing. I don't have a sense about whether Sony is continuing that tradition.

Yes. I remember buying SF6 and then contacting Sony about the possibility of a free upgrade to v.7, which I was not demanding. I was using this forum and bought v.6 without realizing there would soon be a v.7 so I'm guessing two months went by. They were very nice. Probably the nicest they'll ever be, because they were the new owners of SF and wanted to show how good they were going to be. I think policy will be more precise this time: last 60 days, as proven by your receipt -- or something like that.

Ok. I'll answer my own question then. I was able to speak with a customer service rep today who told me that the upgrade price has not been established as of yet. He did explain that the current upgrade cost is $149, and that the upgrade cost to go from 7.0 to 8.0 would not be more than that; and possibly less. As far as the date of the release, he said probably around the beginning of March. Obviously nothing definite, but at least some ball park figures to toss around. I didn't get into the question of "What if I bought 7.0 in February?", etc.
