It's obviously pirated software. Avoid.

There is a LOT of pirated Sony software on eBay. Most of it for $9.99 from sellers who have lots of positive feedback, But if you check all their feedback (i.e., set the number of feedback replies that are listed to 200 so its easier to find the negative ones) you will find one or two that say they received a CD-R and not an original. Many pirates have several ID’s and leave each other positive feedback. (this is not allowed on eBay)

If it looks too good to be true it usually is. Here is what you need to do to tell. Send an email to the seller and ask if these are the real silkscreen CD’s from Sony, or are they a CD-R. This tells the seller that you will be look out for a CD-R copy and possibly report them. Also ask if it comes with the printed manual and box since the serial is in the manual. Finally, (and this is the clincher) ask if they are willing to contact Sony and transfer their registration to the winner.

I find that the pirates will not answer your email because they know you are not going to bit after you hear their and answer AND their answer will incriminate them and get them booted off of eBay. If they are a pirate and they do answer, you may get an answer like “these are the original disks that I received” meaning, it’s my original pirated copy.

You have to be careful. You also have to judge by how long the seller has been an eBay member. I watched a new seller claim he had original copies of SONAR 4 Producer Edition for $100 each (Buy it Now button). I emailed him twice and he never returned my emails so I didn’t bid. After several auctions had gone by, I watched the feedback return, all negative, as he took peoples money and never shipped a product. Not even a pirated copy! I usually don’t bid on new sellers auctions unless they send me convincing emails. Sellers with 5 used copies of ACID Pro for $9.99 each (like on eBay rigyht now) definitely selling pirated software.

You can report the pirates to eBay but it takes a few days for eBay to react. I don’t know why Sony doesn’t prosecute. I think it would make great headlines. “Sony the Software Giant Cracks Down on eBay Pirates!” Since no one prosecutes them, reporting them is a feeble attempt at best. They just come back the next day under a different name.

I’ve bought lots of legitimate software and plug-ins on eBay. All of it with the original silk-screened CD from the manufacturer and for all of them, the seller transferred registration to me. This is what you should be looking for in a seller.

I'm not joking this time ;-)

Yes, pirated software does exist, even for Acid 5.0.
Wrong or right ?... I'm not going to debate about that.

Anyway, one thing is sure : NEVER PAY FOR PIRATED SOFTWARE !

If I were a sofware developer, I would probably tolerate free pirated copies if there are enough licences sold... It's just a question of rentability and market.
That means: "people who can't afford buying my software now are not interested by competitors' products : instead, they are using my sofware, they are talking about my sofware, they're interested in my software. Nice free advertising., isn't it ? And when they have money, chances are that they would consider buying, well, my software, just because they are used to it..."

Without going into the morality of this, I would say that people selling pirated software on eBay are HURTING software developers BIG TIME because some of the people buying it believe that they HAVE PAID for their copy!!!

At least when you go to a shady web site and download pirated software you know what you’re doing and that its wrong. EBay has made pirating a profitable business and is contributing to problem with their “I am not responsible” attitude. ‘nuf said.
