Subject:The item was not found. error message - HELP!

I am receiving the following error message as soon as I open up a few of my acid projects:

An error occurred while loading the project file xxx.acd.
The item was not found.

I've been using a few acid projects files (*.acd) for months and I don't recall anything strange happening before the error popped up. I use the 4.0f version of ACID and I've tried to access the file from multiple installations, including my friends 5.0 version, so I'm pretty sure the problem pertains to the file and not the application.

The file names and paths have not changed at all. The same exact error is occurring to a number of my acid projects, but not all of them. The mod dates do not coincide on the problematic files.

I'm very computer savvy and this error complete eludes me - Specifically because it truly has no detail behind it. It simply sounds like it can't find a file or plugin that it once knew the location of. Shouldn't there be a process to "find" whatever is "missing" when something like that occurs?

Anyhow, needless to say, I'm just concerned with recovering the file. I've been working on some of these tracks for months and other for over a year. I'm going to freak out if I can't at least get on the right track with the troubleshooting process. I like ACID, but instability such as this can easily change my opinion.

If you have any suggestions or comments at all, please let me know.

Thank you,

Do the projects open anyway regardless of the error?

Do you use an uninterruptible power supply (or UPS)? Sometimes, "dirty" power, brownouts and spikes can cause problems and even lead to data loss. Even a slight dip or surge for a fraction of a second could do it, even without you noticing.

>> Do the projects open anyway regardless of the error?
No, unforetunately not. After I click 'OK' on the error dialog box, it simply closes and acts as if I never attempted to open an ACID project in the first place.

Do you think I'm worse off if the project doesn't open?

>>Do you use a UPS?
Yes. Varying APC models protect all of my machines.

This error is just so poorly worded and has no details or dump that comes with it like the rest of ACID's errors that I've seen. I've read some other posts about this same error that all suggests files or plug-ins were moved from their original location. I don't think that's my case, but it does make me feel hopeful about the severity of the error.

Are you aware of any utilities that will rebuild ACID projects or anything to support 'corruption' other than 'BAK' files?

Thank you for the reply.

If the project doesn't open at all, it certainly makes recovery harder, maybe impossible.

I don't know of any utilities that can help rebuild ACID projects. I do remember having a similar problem with trying to open a particular project. I solved it by moving the project back to its original location. (At that time, I had the project originally on C: and moved it to D:; moving it back to C:, opening it from there and then saving it on D: fixed it.)

That was ages ago though and since you stated that your original paths and locations stayed the same, this solution doesn't apply to you.

I can't stress this enough, but always back up projects you deem important as that might avoid any heartache later on.

I'm wondering if it could be a hard disk problem that corrupted your certain projects? (Maybe a read/write error of some sort?)

Output,
I just sent you an email, with details on how you can send us a copy of the corrupted project. I'll do what I can to track down the problem, and try to salvage your project for you.

Thanks,

Hi

I am receiving this same error.

I have just completed a song and now I'm unable to edit it.

Please assist me with fixing my corrupt .acd file
