Subject:Like, how do you produce a melody?

Sorry if this sounds simplistic, but I'd like to make real music.

About all I hear demo'ed so far is rhythm tracks and techno/euro sounds. Seems it's either for the Basic Instinct club soundtrack or it's a track waiting for a lead singer to supply the melody.

If I want to reproduce a public domain song, how do you make Acid play a melody?

Get a public domain midi of it. Mind you, if you plan to manipulate your midi track you'll soon find Acid a little uncooperative. But it'll play your melody just fine.

ACID is only as good as the loops you buy for it. Go to Sony’s Loop Library and you’ll find an extensive collection of loops that are not techno/euro. Or try a small loop vendor like Hark Productions and check out their Gorgeous Piano or Sustained Inversions and you’ll hear a whole different sound. Don’t let the demos fool you. You can make any kind of music you want in ACID.

So plug in a Mic and sing your heart out. ACID works fine for recording vocals. You may even find the vocals you need in an acapella collection.

As TorS suggested, MIDI is probably the easiest way. Either play the melody yourself on a MIDI keyboard or program it in using the MIDI Piano Roll Editor. If it is a public domain song and you can find a MIDI version of it, you can use StolenTrack from GenieSys to extract just the melody from a MIDI file and assign it to a separate track in ACID. Then assign whatever Soft Synth you want to it.

As everyone's mentioned thus far, part of ACID's power is what you throw at it, your own custom material included. Your best bet is either to record your own, find loops that have a melody line, or go with MIDI.
